Because I could not stop for Death -
He kindly stopped for me -

dying is usually an unedifying process
full of pain + fear + suffering
often its a squalid , sickening struggle

as a tribute to her dear departed friend Robert Mapplethorpe Patti Smith gives us The Coral Sea
here is lyrical prose as immortal as Emily Dickinson's Because I Could Not Stop For Death

Patti imagines Robert on a ship voyaging across the seas
a sea of possibilities
he doesn't know just where he's going
but he's gonna try for the Kingdom if he can

as he dreams of the past , maybe one of the other passengers on the ship is Death
for Death in all its majesty here is Patti Smith at her lyrical best

in all of Literature never has there been an ending as immortally beautiful as when the soul of Robert is freed
by the hand of God
