In this book they have Corduroy blatantly lie to his friend it says: “Don’t worry, I have an idea [for a costume], said Corduroy. But he didn’t really.” - I don’t know know who wrote that line (because they don’t list the author) but it doesn’t make ANY sense why they have his character just lie to his friend. It could have easily been changed to ‘I’ll think of something’ which is what happens in the story. The fact that he lied was glossed over and he doesn’t face any consequences is not great material for impressionable kids. My daughter loves the original two books by Don Freeman, but if all of these ‘based on the character’ books are like this then I won’t bother reading them to her.

Now that it's fall, I was searching for a Halloween book that included some of the annual activities I do with my 2 1/2 year old daughter such as going to the pumpkin patch, raking leaves, decorating, and of course Trick or Treating, but that also didn't include the scarier aspects of Halloween like zombies and skeletons. This fit the bill perfectly and my daughter has been asking to read it everyday.
In the story, Corduroy and his friends go the pumpkin patch together, rakes leaves, help a shop owner paint decorations, and talk about what they are going to be for Halloween. Corduroy goes shopping for his costume, being careful not to get costumes like his friends will have, and he decides to be a dinosaur. The day of his Halloween party, his friend Puppy comes over upset that his costume has ripped and Corduroy gives Puppy his own costume to help him feel better, though he now has no costume. He decides to take the tablecloth off and cut eye holes in it and be a ghost and he and his friends have a great time Trick or Treating.
As I said, I love that this story focuses on the non-gory aspects of Halloween that are frightening for younger kids but also includes seasonal activities and Trick or Treating. I really love the moral behind the story of putting someone else's needs above your own and it really illustrates what a great friend Corduroy is to give up something he liked to help his friend. He also showcased his creativity in making a makeshift costume so he could still Trick or Treat. It's just a great book with a wonderful message. The illustrations are beautifully done and very colorful, bright, and engaging. While some may complain that this is not the "original Corduroy," to me it wasn't a big deal nor did it take away from the book or its message at all. Highly recommended book for this fall season!

My 2-year-old granddaughter, who loves books more than anything, instantly fell in love with this book. It went to the top of her favorite list. The story is very cute and the illustrations are even cuter. It's nice that the story focuses on friendship in a way little ones can understand. This book made such an impression on her that when she "reads" her other books (having nothing to do with Halloween), she ends with, "It was the best Halloween ever!" :)
This book was perfect introduction to Halloween for my 2 year old who will be trick-or-treating for the first time this year. It covered the aspects I wanted: picking out a pumpkin at the pumpkin patch, picking out a costume, and trick-or- treating. I also loved that other fall aspects such as raking leaves, eating pumpkin pie, carving pumpkins and bobbing for apples were mentioned as well. The story is centered around sharing and teaching the importance of friendship above all else. The illustrations are so cute and have taken me back to the Halloweens of my childhood. This book has made her so excited for Halloween and she reads it multiple times a day. I wish I had it in hardcover to hold up over the years as I see myself pulling this out every Halloween for her and her little brother.
The book tells an adorable, non-spooky Halloween story of Corduroy and his friends having a fun adventure picking out the perfect Halloween costume. Corduroy has always been a favourite of mine and this is a lovely read with colourful illustrations. I bought this for a 1 year old, thinking it was a board book-it's actually a thin, soft cover book better suited for children 3 and up. My mistake for not noticing. Still I will enjoy reading this to her through the fall.
Our child loves the Corduroy books and we were excited to see a Halloween themed book. But note that this is not by the original author and the only thing this has in common is the main character. It’s still a good story. But if you want authentic Corduroy, this isn’t it.

I ordered this for my 2 year old but it was way too long for her and did not hold her attention. Definitely not the same Corduroy books that I remember as a kid. Maybe she will enjoy it more in a couple years.

Okay story, but not written in the charming style of the original books. My 2.5 yo will sit through the whole story, but it's not one she asks for where as the original two Corduroy books she LOVES.
Our family has read this book to our grandsons at least three times each. He really enjoys it and never gets tired of it. I will buy more Corduroy books for him for Christmas.
