Fiona:
Men. Lying, cheating bastards. All of them. I had a great boyfriend, a great job, and a promising future. Until the redheads started ruining everything. In an instant, my life changed. My boyfriend cheated on me, I was forced to quit my job, and my father went and had a massive heart attack. Before he died, he left me something: His company, Winslow Wines. I was the newly appointed CEO of my family-owned business, which was in the midst of financial ruins until one man, who I met under awkward circumstances, stepped in and offered to save me. He was sexy, bold, rich, a womanizer, and your typical corporate ass. He wouldn't take no for an answer and that was all I was willing to give, until I was faced with a problem. I fell for him. He was a game player and I was more than willing to play.
Nathan:
Women. Too complicated. Relationships. Too many expectations. No thanks. I didn't have time for any complications in my life. My work and my company were my priorities and women were my hobby. Have sex, say goodbye, and never look back. Life couldn't be simpler. Then I met Fiona Winslow. A beautiful, strong, independent, sassy, and always-telling-me-no kind of woman. I thrived on being in control and she was uncontrollable. I had met my match.

The main characters are one-dimensional, and quite frankly, I had a hard time liking either one of them. I found Fiona to be childish and immature. Admittedly, I've been in a relationship where I had to track text messages because I didn't trust my partner at that time, so I won't judge that too harshly. But hacking in her ex's phone (with a technology that I am not aware exists, i.e. she can view all texts he sends/receives, and she can respond as him, but the responses to those texts goes only to her phone??)? Committing a felony on the man's car because he cheated? Placing an "app" on her man's phone so that she could track his whereabouts? Extorting services from her former boss/best friend's boss by threatening to expose his cheating ways to his wife (by the way, twice she threatened him with his sexual exploits)? I have read the sweetest to the darkest romance books, to mysteries, and other books where many characters do things outside of the law (and I was "okay" with it for purposes of the story) but some of Fiona's actions just rubbed me the wrong way because they seemed so unnecessary. I recognize that she was doing these things out of loyalty to friends, or she was pissed off at a cheating partner, but it made her look immature and simple-minded.
As for Nathan, several times in the book I wanted to yell at him to grow up. He wanted what he wanted, and not in a "alpha male" dominance kind of way, but a childish kind of way (i.e. he was upset she wouldn't have dinner with him one night because she had already committed to dinner with her best friend. Really?). His reasons for not being able to love and commit also felt flimsy. Additionally, I felt Nathan and his best friend, Will, spent a little too much time talking about the women in their lives. There was a lot of kissing and telling, and some of the conversation felt inappropriate between two men, talking about the women they liked and had relations with. At one point, Will says that Fiona's best friend is an "animal" in bed; Nathan is no better, confirming he and Fiona had slept together (in a vulgar way). Perhaps this is real world, but the heroes in the novels I like to read are more adult, and don't engage in locker room talk post-high school. Some things are better kept somewhat private. I guess what I am trying to get at is that it seemed hard to believe that Nathan was this rich, successful venture capitalist when he seemed so immature and whiny.
As I previously mentioned, the story was so rushed it was unbelievable. At 37%, Fiona was "falling" for Nathan, and at that point, they'd only slept together twice, and had only exchanged what seemed to be superficial conversations. I was struggling to see 'what' exactly she was falling for, because they hadn't been together enough to really warrant that. In fact, I went back several pages on my Kindle to see if I had missed a time jump or some quick paragraph saying something to the effect of "we continued meeting up for weeks ..." to show they had actually done more than sleep together twice, and have dinner a handful of times. In sum, the love felt forced. At the end, Nathan begrudgingly admitted he loved Fiona, but it was hardly anything to make you swoon. Not like this author is capable of writing (a la A Love Called Simon) in terms of swoon-worthy men. I can forgive a lot of unrealistic, poorly written crap if I believe in the romance. And I can't say that I could believe in their "love".
Unfortunately, I think I am going to have to be a little more judicious when buying books in the future. This book was really not this author's finest work.
2.5 stars
She was passed over for a promotion because a redhead was getting busy with the bossman. So, Fiona quit. She worked hard for the promotion, and she's a take no prisoner kind of girl. She was about to take a new job when she got word her father died, and he left her his failing wine company. She had to figure out how to save it after her father made a series of bad business deals.
Enter Nathan. He's willing to help Fiona save her failing company. Kind of like a business superman. Nathan doesn't do relationships. He's a wham bam thank you ma'am kind of guy. Uh, can we say mommy issues? It seems like Nathan has ulterior motives when he has sex with Fiona. As a reader, I didn't trust him. Fiona didn't either. Good girl. Trust your feminist gut. Did he sleep with her because he wanted her company?
Fiona doesn't take it lightly when people screw her over. Her tough as nails, crazy persona is a turn on for Nathan. What!? He likes crazy chicks? He's asking for trouble in a big way.
Fiona was HILARIOUS. I laughed and laughed at her antics. I kinda wish I had that ability. I'd love to give some payback. She did slip into crazy territory with her ex, but her other plans were flawless.
Her one weakness was Nathan. He slid into her life like a snake and took over all her thoughts. Oh yeah. The inevitable push and pull began. It was
HOT! Fan yourself ladies. I love it when the main characters have HOT chemistry.
Fiona has serious hate for redheads. So, at one point in the book Nathan gets a picture of a redhead for the office. Fiona puts her heels to good use stomping all over it. Yes, Fiona is fierce! She's not one of those whiny chicks. I love that about this book.
Sometimes the characters whine and complain and bitch. It. Gets. Old. (Hint for authors.)
Sandi Lynn's stories are interesting, funny, and different than other books I've read. I always enjoy her characters. I hate it when authors write the same story with different characters. It's annoying. I usually avoid those books. Anyways, back to Sandi Lynn. I've read a number of her books, and they always keep me entertained. I get so lost I read the books in a matter of hours.
Do I recommend this book? Hell yes! ALL of Sandi Lynn's books are worth your time.
