Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

K-Gr 3-The term couch potato was coined in 1979 to describe kids who spent more time on the couch than outside playing. John's book toys with that concept in this exaggerated story of an anthropomorphic potato who pridefully shows the reader every device it owns. Each of them is designed to make sure Couch Potato never gets off the couch. When one last device is delivered and is plugged in, the lights go out. Couch Potato opens the curtains and notices what they haven't seen in ages: the outdoors! With nothing else to do, Couch Potato ventures outside and finds there is plenty to do. The COVID-19 pandemic has kept children in isolation indoors and developing couch potato tendencies through no fault of their own; this tale is timely and helps make the point that a balance of technology and old-school fun might be the way to go. The cartoonish art serves the story well, reaching for every last pun and bit of wordplay. VERDICT A goofy story about the dangers of too much of one thing, and a lighthearted lesson for all.-Joan Kindig, James Madison Univ., Harrisonburg, VAα(c) Copyright 2011. 5.0 out of 5 stars Another great book by this duo!
By Kristen on November 11, 2020
I absolutely love these authors and this collection. I was so excited when I saw the duo was coming out with another book and preordered it immediately and it did not disappoint. I immediately shared it with my kindergarten class but also my 3rd grade student I mentor and it was enjoyed by all. A great message presented in a clear fun way for kids with a little bit of humor for the adults too!

5.0 out of 5 stars another hit !!!!
By Patty on November 25, 2020
We look forward to the arrival of each and every Jory John book, these wonderful stories always showcases Jory's unique ability to relate with young children in a way that keeps us coming back for more. Not only is eating snacks and playing board games a daily event at our house but a comfortable slouch on the couch ends most days. If Sophia could rename her dog I am sure he would end up being called King Tater! BTW..... tater tots have become a real favorite!
