Requires focus to keep track of which life you are witnessing. Trying to understand what motivates a character's action and recognizing when motives change is the beauty of this terrific, exciting, a little bit demanding series. JK Simmons is impressive playing with a multi faceted identity, at once black and white, then sliding into shades of personality from which emerge the other. The cast is brilliant, good looking and, it appears, wholly immersed in their characters. The direction builds out complex characters while keeping the production wrapped tightly around the story. The sets are stark but cool. It's not slick or glitzy and has a somewhat somber, people dealing with hard lives sense, which for me feels honest. JK Simmons is something else.
