Great Godly Examples, but Still Underwhelmed
Reviewed in the United States on October 20, 2012
With a teen son in the house, I'm always on the look-out for resources that will challenge and inspire him through these hard years. When I saw that Courageous Teens by Michael Catt and Amy Parker was available, I couldn't wait to receive it and share with our son.
Courageous Teens is a student-focused presentation of Courageous Living by Michael Catt, senior pastor of Sherwood Baptist Church and executive producer of the hit film Courageous.
Catt brings fresh insight to "stories of people in the Bible who displayed great courage when it would have been easier to play it safe . . . (who) challenge me to keep moving forward. They demand that I examine my priorities and deal with anything that brings fear to my heart."
Teen readers will be inspired to resolve to live for God as they learn more about Abraham, Moses, Nehemiah, Ruth, Daniel, and many more.
Best-selling youth market author Amy Parker arranges the heart-stirring material into four categories: Courageous Faith, Courageous Leadership, Courageous Priorities, and Courageous Influence. Discussion questions are also included at the end of each chapter.
The book contains Godly examples to encourage teens, but both my teen and I felt a tad underwhelmed. We wondered if there would be more movie tie-ins as he was so inspired by Courageous. Knowing the key demographic is teens, I thought there would be added visuals or technology to enhance teens' experience with the book. These days the kids are bored fast by a basic book. Like it or not, they want more bells and whistles, and Courageous Teens didn't deliver. My son returned it to me and said "It has great information but I was looking for more. I found I was bored."
It's not a bad book but I expected more. I Am Second has videos and a web site that was publicized and that inspired my teen. Sadly, Courageous Teens did not.
I received Courageous Teens from the Amazon Vine Program in exchange for an honest review.
