5.0 out of 5 starsColor a bit of fashion accessory history with these vintage hand fans
Reviewed in the United States on May 25, 2017
I'm confused by most of the reviews seen here, because they are for a book of winter scenes rather than for the book sold on this page, which is vintage hand fans. My review is for Creative Haven's Vintage hand Fans.

That being said, you can't go wrong with Creative Haven coloring books, with their one-sided format, good quality perforated pages, and talented artists. Marty Noble is one of my favorite coloring book artists, and in this book, she doesn't disappoint. The collection of hand fans she depicts, as she explains in the introductory note, are actual fans, some from the collection of Anna Checcoli, known as a preeminent collector of fine antique fans, and some from museums. These fans come from around the world, and are predominantly from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Some are folding fans and others are paddle-type. All of them are beautifully portrayed with enough detail to be challenging to color, and are designed for the experienced colorist. I like the fact that a decorative background and border surrounds each illustration to set off the fans in an elegant way and to keep the illustration from coming too close to the book binding. This book is both fun to color and provides a bit of fashion history.

2.0 out of 5 starsA lot of mistakes!
Reviewed in the United States on February 29, 2016
Gorgeous, BUT when I started to color I found a lot of sloppy mistakes in the drawings. They were not even small mistakes but fairly major, such as half the body missing on one female figure. I penciled it in but as I went on to color more, and found even more mistakes to correct, (which I did with whiteout and a pencil, since some of them were drawn mistakes, not just missing parts) I became increasingly annoyed. I buy coloring books because I want to color not draw. I actually found and corrected six in just one drawing on page 5. There could be more, but I gave up. I got too aggravated. I didn't check the other drawings to see if it was the case in the whole book. One page was enough for me.

If you can look past the mistakes there's some very pretty pages to color. Unfortunately I can not and will never purchase a book by Marty Noble again!

5.0 out of 5 stars Well worth it.

I really like this book. I've picked up several adult themed coloring books over the past few months and I've learned that I like having somewhat smaller and more complicated scenes to work with compared to broad empty expanses to color. I, however, don't care for patterns for the sake of patterns. This combines my likes quite well.

Like many of the images on the front of these coloring books, the internal image is not as complex. The fan on the cover is the second fan in the book. It doesn't have the lines and such things. You can really get artistic with these fans or just color them for fun. It is up to you.

Each image is presented on its own page. The backs are blank. They are all perforated to tear out easily.

About half of the fans have people or faces. The rest are flowers or animals/flowers. A few pages have two fans instead of one large one.

I have used gel pen and colored pencil on them. They handle the pen well. It has not stained through the paper. The paper has picked up a mild wrinkle from heavy use of wet material.

Some of the images and areas get quite small. I like this. But it requires a sharp pencil or careful pen work to get into the edges.

5.0 out of 5 stars Marty Noble hits another home run!

I absolutely love this book! I prefer to have rather intricate designs and this definitely fits the bill!

I started coloring a year or so go at the suggestion of a dear friend. I became totally disabled in 2000 which led to me having to give up my career. I suffer with pain every day as a result of my disability and keeping my mind occupied helps me to deal with the constant pain. I’m always seeking new ways to keep myself busy during the day besides reading and coloring has proven to be a wonderful distraction.

Over the past year I’ve experimented with types of coloring books and various pencils, pens and markers. I quickly realized how wonderful the Creative Haven books are...the designs are printed one one side, the paper is a nice weight and the pages are perforated. I like to remove the pages which makes it much easier to work on as I can rotate the page to color and not have to worry about smearing the ink. I tend to use either gel pens or brush markers

5.0 out of 5 stars Very awesome coloring book

This coloring book is really nice. They fans are from different time periods and countries, so you will find ones from France to Japan or ones from the 20s to ones from the 1800's or even before that. Some of them are very complex so using fine liner markers or gel pens may be your best bet. One of them I used a mixture of color pencils and gel pens and it came out nice, it was a Japanese fan that had egrets and cherry blossom trees. There is a page in the front of the book that tells you what time period each fan is from and what country it's from too so there is some historic value to this book too. Love this!

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice collection of vintage hand fans, but bleed-through from gel pens.

I'm working on my first coloring from this book. I'm using AEN Art Gel Pens, and I'm finding there is bleed-through with the paper. While there is no design on the back side, I'd prefer no bleed-through at all. Next time, I'll copy the design and reprint it on paper with a different thickness.

Each page is delightfully beautiful. Many shapes are very small. Must use pens or sharp pencils. Pen ink does not bleed through.

Ordered this as a holiday gift for a good friend who collected fans. Sadly there was a fire in her building and she lost all of her fans.
She was absolutely thrilled with this book, and loves the fact she can create her own fans until she can replace those she lost.
