MagicInk isn’t your average tattoo shop—it’s a mecca for the weird and unusual.
Katie Bishop keeps her head low and goes about her business like any other mundane citizen of Savannah. But the dragon tattoo on her back since birth isn’t ink at all—it’s her reality.
She owns a tattoo shop at the edge of town, but the people who work at MagicInk are more than just employees—they’re family. So, when she makes a grave mistake and accidentally frees a rogue god imprisoned in an old grimoire, she’ll do whatever it takes to rectify that problem before the city falls. Even if the ultimate price is her death.
As if running a business and hunting a ruthless god isn’t enough of a challenge, Jackson Hunter rides into town and blows everything to hell. But just like her, he isn’t what he seems. Will he help or hinder the hunt?
The Katie Bishop series is full of action, but it’s also about finding your tribe. If you like found families and a good dose of humor, this one’s for you.
For fans of Mercy Thompson mixed with a little Sookie Stackhouse.

First of all, Katie, the main character, is dumb. Not that she's written as dumb, she's written as a seemingly normal person who just keeps doing stupid things and that's frustrating. After months of nightmares about a very specific tattoo, a guy walks into her store and requests . . . the specific and unique tattoo she's been seeing in her nightmares. So what does she do? Immediately inks it on him. Even after local supernatural experts warn her that doing the next tattoo will lead to catastrophic consequences, she doesn't really seem to take it as seriously as she should. It isn't that the world of magic and the supernatural is foreign to her and she doesn't believe them -- she's a shifter herself. She just doesn't really seem to care about something that would be a really big deal to the average person.
The second issue with the book is the treatment of Sugar, Katie's friend. Sugar is a transgender woman, but the author seems determined to portray her in a demeaning way. Katie thinks of her as a "man in a dress," cattily calls attention to the ways Sugar isn't passing, and generally is just determined to make us view Sugar as some kind of freak. She's an interesting character who deserves more from the author.
This book reminded me why I love the shifter small towns in the South. Small town with big families, and with cases like this, it's chosen family. Katie is a tattoo artist making her way through life with her own shop and a dedication to having some type of 'normal' life with the beast she was born with. Along the way, she has to slowly reveal herself to those she trusts while at the same time, dangerous things in town are revealing themselves - whether she wants to know or not.
I thought this was exciting. I loved the tone, enjoyed the fast-paced attitude even as a lot of things were happening to keep things interesting. Katie's friends were endearing. Nothing too deep considering the pace, but it was all consistent. The only thing I'd want to point out is that a certain relationship seemed a little off only because it felt a little quick, but I'm just going to give it the benefit of the doubt. I really did like Katie and the way she handled herself. Easy to like in my opinion, and I loved some of her friends, especially Sugar.
It's a definite recommend.

These are a nice combination of some historical, fantasy, and real-world references/struggles/situations with the main character being a tattoo artist, small business owner, and dragon shifter who has to deal with gods, witches, and paying rent. Just enough real life to make the fantasy relatable and almost believable.
If you enjoy this series, check out her first series, the Fitheach Trilogy, as well. (Or better yet, start there since this series builds on Fitheach!)
The writing is solid enough and there weren't any grammatical mistakes.
But I gave this two stars because the action and plot were a little underwhelming. But mostly, it's the action.
The main character starts off digging a grave, then getting frustrated. All of a sudden, the dead body in the grave wakes up. Aaaand...
That was a dream. So the beginning threw me off a little. It felt a little cliched. I was led to believe the main character was doing something interesting, and then I read about her mundane life. So far, meh, so I thought I'd keep reading.
The main character turns out to be a tattoo artist, and she shows her associates the dragon tattoo on her back. Apparently she's half dragon, half human, or something like that. I believe the author mentioned something about the dragon attacking some bad guys? That would have been more interesting than showing the dragon to an ordinary man.
Then she goes to work in her tattoo shop, and everybody central to the plot walks in. Fair enough. Then the human with a spirit in him walks in and wants a tattoo, and she obliges.
Then someone comes in, some things happen, and they have to go and meet the grandmother of the human who knows about her dragon tattoo.
It all felt a little underwhelming. I would have liked to see some action, some fight scenes, or at least some transformation scenes. I wanted the stakes to be raised, but 13% in, it's all talk, and maybe some mystery, but still talk. I couldn't finish this book.

Katie Bishop is a tattoo artist who owns her own shop, in Savannah. She happens to have an amazing dragon tattooed on her back, that occasionally moves around. She hasn’t lived in Savannah long but has made a few good friends, including her employee Sea Bass (Sebastian) and Lady Sugar a big beautiful black transgendered woman.
Katie has been keeping her secret from her friends but one day a man walks into her shop asking for a strange tattoo she has seen in her dreams and everything about her life in Savannah changes.
This is my favourite type of Urban Fantasy, with a strong female protagonist with a good group of friends around her. I particularly like that Katie has such good friendships with Sea Bass and Sugar, both of whom are fantastic characters who really care about her well being.
I like that we learn about Savannah’s supernatural community and history alongside Katie as it is revealed to her throughout the book, but I feel that there are some things that are half explained about Katie’s past. I felt that there was some information I was missing and it was a little annoying.
I can see from the Author’s Goodreads page that she has a series set in New York, so I wonder if Katie’s character was introduced in that series as a support character, as that is where she originally lived. Plus, there are references to all the weird stuff that happened in New York, so this is what has led me to make assumptions about previous books. I’d be interested to know if I’m right, but not interested enough to read the books.
I really enjoyed this book as it has an interesting plot and the characters are great. The world building isn’t perfect but it’s still good enough to keep me within the moment as I read. I will definitely be reading the rest of the series.

The twist in the storyline is interesting regarding to her tattoo. I found her friends were a bit strange, because they all hiding something at the start and her tattoo about her Dragon will not stay long as a secret. I found it weird that nearly everyone knows about it. Katie is quite forthcoming to everyone, I didn't liked it.
And somehow I felt the story is rushed, it's all so quickly, not a good build up of excitement not even as Katie and sugar has been kidnapped by the spirit, sorry I have already forgotten his name. And there was no insight and interaction after Fin and Jackson got Katie and sugar out of the building, nothing, even no interactions with Jackson, no information on how they secured the spirit again, I found this very lame. This would have been the best part of it, but instead she was back in her tattoo studio, as nothing has happened. So I don't think that I get the second book in this series, also to pricey for the length of it.
It could have been so much better. Sorry.

She followed a man, it didn't work out.
But she found 'family' when she opened the studio.
Really enjoyed the story and the writing.
