In the future, I hope the author uses more contractions—they’re, that’s, we’re, I’m—which help dialogue flow more smoothly. I noted information dumps, repetitions of facts (example: rangers versus sheriff’s deputies), exactly worded descriptions (“bile rising up . . .), too many prosaic explanations, etc. As an aside, I was surprised to read “Paracetamol” in an American mystery.
As a crime fiction fan, I’ve read about brutal rapists, macabre killers, and grisly murders. On a graphic violence scale of 1 to 10, I rate this book a firm 10.
Front and center is a killer who enjoys—even celebrates—inflicting pain, so there are vivid descriptions of torture, maiming, killing with various weapons, and necrophilism.
The romance is okay, but just get it over with! I am not a fan of the dragging out of these relationships. It does not make me want to read the next one, I only read these for the actual premise. At least Alton no longer gets offended by every comment a male superior makes!
The thing that made me smile in this book was the British phrases/words such as; “Sleeping Rough”, “Rucksack” and “Paracetamol”. DK Hood is definitely British!
I’ll keep reading this series regardless, because I truly like the authors writing style and the way she weaves a story.
This is a hard book to put down, wonderful characters, with lots of twists and surprises. The police procedures are detailed and interesting, especially the behavioral analysis done by Kane. This is an exciting and entertaining read!
If you like a whodunit that keep you jumping from page to page to find the next clue found and try to figure out the serial killers identify is, this is the book for you.
I like the style of D.K. Good and am looking forward to reading more of her books.

This is an explosive, exhilarating rollercoaster of a book. Pay for view THRILL kills by a psychopathic killer. This book is everything I expect from this author and more. It is very graphic and a very good police procedural. I knew that when this book landed in my inbox I was in for a hell of a ride. This is definitely my type of book, serial killers are my favourite genre and this one is nasty. In the climax when the killer was revealed it was a shock and not who I was expecting. This is the sign of a good no brilliant writing. This author hooks you and gradually reels you in until you just have to keep on reading. I feel as though I have been running through the forest since the first page. A really fantastic read. How much longer do I have to wait for the next in this series. Don't think I would like to live in Black Rock Falls people keep dying.
I would like to thank the author DK Hood, Bookouture and Net.galley for giving me the opportunity to read this book in return for giving an honest review.
As the weather gets colder the number of bodies increases and with each killing the level of depravity increases. Knowing the best way to apprehend their killer is to catch him in the act Kane, Alton and their team head into his kill zone within the forest but this time their luck may well have run out as they run the risk of becoming caught in his trap themselves.
Once again this is a cracking read with a heartstopping conclusion. Being able to get a glimpse of the reasoning of the killer and seeing the murders through his eyes is both chilling and fascinating in equal measure. The team is familiar now and, like reconnecting with old friends, each has a place in the story I don't want anyone else to take. This is an excellent continuation of a first class series and I can't wait to begin their next adventure.
As Detectives Kane and Alton take on a killer I did not see coming, and with perfect pacing, twists, and an edge-of-your-seat ending D.K. Hood really knocked it out of the park, and has made this series one I can't stop reading.
