I guess how satisfied with this book you are depends on what you expected. I don't feel that I can really rate it for what it is, because I didn't understand it and didn't want to get a graduate math degree so that I could. I read the first page or two and returned it I erroneously thought that it was for a layman and, for instance, would include stories about the use of codes during wartime and for espionage. So I hate to give it the average rating of 3 stars, because it may be great for its targeted reader, but I had to rate it something to be able to make this comment, which I think might help other potential buyers in their purchase decisions.

So I like the book as I am completely clueless about cryptology and thought this book was a place to start. It seems for the most part to actually be yes. However, they writers leave out some information that is key to the end of chapter ciphers. For example the first chapter for columnar transpositions also has a magic square reference but in no place does the text recommend or tell you that you need to learn how to do magic squares. I looked at this cipher for hours. Once i figured it out then it was fine but it could have stated more clearly to find another resource for this before continuing. Same thing in chapter 2 with geometrical. The end chapter ciphers need keys. I’m stuck here because the examples in the reading of chapter 2 they just give you the keys. But don’t explain well how one is to derive a key from a random cipher. The. When comparing to the answers it say with a key of “*some random word*” I’m still confused on this I feel necessary information is missing in these chapters especially for people with no prior experience. Do able. But you will be on a chapter for days maybe longer just trying to cipher the end chapter puzzles wondering what you missed.

That title was not meant to be patronizing in any way: simply that this book was written around the time of Second World War, and the ability to break ciphers and codes has advanced with the use of computers. Ciphers/codes that were once unsolvable are now easily broken. That being said, this book shows how ciphers can be broken if you are prepared to work at it. Charts at the back of the book show the most common English words, double letters and triple letters. It also shows that nothing really replaces human intelligence and insight when it comes to code breaking. Very good book for the student of cryptography, as it shows how the experts then did it. And let's not slight them. They helped win the war.

So, I read Simon Singh's The Code, and reading this after that book, I realized it was a good order to go in. This book is a very valuable resource to you codebreakers out there that want to extend your knowledge of the subject, but if you want the basics, start with the book "The Code". This book is much more of equations extended from the originals. For those people who just understand mathematics easily, you could start from this book and not have a problem.

Overall, the book itself covers several methods of attack, monoalphabetic ciphers coming the easiest to solve. Along after that is things like the Vigenere cipher and other polyalphabetic ciphers. In addition, there are even more goodies in the back, such as the most common occuring two and three letter words for your convenience, along with the most occuring words in order. So if you want a good reference book for supporting your cause in fighting the encryption of your high school nemesis passing a 'encoded' note, this will help.

If you're looking for a little history on the subject, you will not find it here. If you want that, again, Simon Singh's 'The Code', or if you want a deeper, longer read, get David Kahn's 'The Codebreakers'. Cheers!

Nevertheless, it is quite well written and enjoyable, with many examples to solve (most solutions included, but there are a few unsolved ciphertexts).
