Already a legend among the corsairs of the Silver Coast, Captain Ngala of The Gamka and his cutthroats ply the Mirror Sea for glittering spoil, threading between the vengeance of the unforgiving ocean and the justice of the western empires always at their back. On the run after a night raid, success is in reach when his ship is moored in the mysterious Shallow Bay.
The crew’s terror multiplies as the dreaded song of a deadly brine-singer echoes across the waves, summoning a terrifying monster from the depths. Against the murderous onslaught of the horrific beast and the mystery of the enchanted singer, Ngala must stem a rising mutiny as desperation and bloodshed spawns fear and betrayal. Every secret, no matter how deep, must be unearthed to end the curse of Shallow Bay. With his ship, crew, and very family at stake, how far will Ngala go to rescue everyone and everything he loves?
For fans of Pirates of the Caribbean and Conan the Barbarian, voyage deep into the epic unknown in The Curse of Shallow Bay.

About the author

Risen from the hills of North Carolina, Jay Requard is an award-winning fantasy author known for “heroes with genuine emotions and concerns for the word they live in” facing off against the darkest powers with little more than love, courage, steel, and magic to set things right. From the pulse- pounding heists of Thief of Destiny to the dark desert romance of Death & Dust and other tales of wonder, readers have noted his modern take on the genre feels like “diving into new hero mythology.”

The story was a grim, energetic read set against the sound of the waves at sunset. There’s a deadly peril in Shallow Bay, and the weary raider Captain Ngala struggles to get his ship free before he loses the last of his crew, but he and the reader are in for a few surprises. What held me most was the family drama of the old Captain and his two warrior children, one of whom proves the greatest test to his command.
So many fantasy protagonists are oh so sarcastic and clever these days, and it was refreshing to follow characters who take themselves and the dangers they face deadly serious. With a thrilling roar of defiance, they leap into battle. But it’s not all muscle and bloodshed, there are also moments of tenderness that make these characters feel whole. (My favorites are between the captain and the old time keeper Nkuku, which are often quick and read as effortless and true.)
This is a weird tale set in a world that feels lived in and strange. There are things we don’t understand. Its horizons stretch farther than we can see. Bend your back at the oars to escape The Curse of Shallow Bay and see what comes next!
