Interesting take on the Beast of Gevaudan
Verified purchase
For those familiar with the story of the Beast of Gevaudan and other films based/borrowing from this them, you will generally recognize where the film is headed. Nonetheless, this variation on the theme is well-produced and generally well written (perhaps excepting the time/period jump - you'll see). The Roma/gypsy aspect was different, not as fleshed out as it could've been but still interesting. A fair amount of action and some gore, along with good creature effects, sufficient to be called horror (though it's definitely on the lighter side of that). Overall, well done and worth watching if you like period pieces about mysterious beasts and some lighter violence. To me, it was worth the rental price and I think a solid 3.75-4 stars, so I rounded up to be fair. It's much better than many of the new rental releases out there right now.

I would ignore the more recent "one star" review and give the film a shot. I still don't understand how those "critics" who don't even finish a film feel justified leaving a terrible review (you know who you are). It seems they don't need to be completely informed (i.e., actually watching it) to spout off. If your criticisms are based on the wardrobe of a period piece - frankly I'm not sure what that type of viewer is doing here.

I really loved pretty much everything about this film and the sound was amazing! On the edge of my seat for the majority of the film and enjoyed the twists and turns! Don't wanna give too much away but this is a good one and you won't be disappointed.

Not just a Great Horror Film, a Great Thriller film but outright A GREAT MOVIE

The storyline is amazing and this is extraordinarily well written. I absolutely love the camera work, the plot line and the special effects. VERY realistic. I really have to credit the great acting in this movie and put it in the ranks of Frankensteins Monster. Truly a very worthy film on all account. It is gory at the right times in the right way. They plot line has you guessing and paying attention to every minute of the film. It really does keep you captivated.

One thing for sure - pay attention to the beginning of the movie as you really do want to see how it comes full circle. GREAT plot line!!!

We have been watching horror movies for years and this one brings class back to the genre. Not gore for gores sake nor errant story lines making their way into the movie for the sake of a directors whim. Every scene is key to the story. Thank you for the movie!!

Finally, a good movie!

Great acting, setting, story, SFX, and really beautiful cinematography. Before this movie, I'd never heard of the Beast of Gévaudan, and found this take on the tale interesting: a village that participated in the genocide of a band of gypsies, resulting in a gypsy curse. The reviewers who complain the movie is too slow probably think something like "Wyrmwood" is a great movie (lol).

If in between the violence and monsters and gore, you can stand people having conversations, and exploring the meaning of things, and the visual splendor of this place, you will probably enjoy this movie.

Slow-burner horror
Verified purchase
I watched the horror film The Cursed, written and directed by Sean Ellis, last night. Before I proceed further, if you prefer your horror with quick cuts and jump scares, then this film probably isn’t for you. It’s slow and methodical. It builds tension. It reminds me of Robert Eggers’ the Witch. Both are period dramas/horror., The Cursed taking place during the late 1800s. They tease the viewer throughout the film. They are both beautifully shot and acted. The Cursed was loved by critics over at Rotten Tomatoes, but only has a so-so rating from audience members. I think this is because it’s not the type of horror film most audiences expect. And that expectation will lead to disappointment. I remember watching the Witch in theaters and loving it, but hearing someone as the credits roll lament “what the hell was that?” There are some very effective scenes of dread. There are some very disturbing uses of gore that made me cringe. My only real critiques fall into two places. One is the CGI “wolves”. The film is based on the Beast of Gévaudan, a French historical event where a beast or beasts attacked hundreds in the 1700s. The film adds the Curse of the title into the mix and the Beast becomes a man/wolf hybrid. However, the CGI doesn’t look great. I’d have rather seen some practical effects used instead. The other critique is the length. It runs almost 2 hours but could have easily trimmed some time. It has a framing sequence that takes place during WWI, but it actually doesn’t serve the story at all. So, the “Sum Up”: slowburner horror film that’s definitely worth a watch as long as you understand that going in.

The Cursed is a stand-out, slow-burn movie in a world where high gore and splatter horror is the norm. Horror tropes are reasonably easy to predict as we've gotten used to them, but The Cursed is a solid period piece production. It's with the watch.
