She went in search of her past… and found danger in the present. Former seamstress Clara Blackwood seems to have found happiness at last. Now a blissfully married baroness, she is mistress of a grand estate. But soon a mysterious summons shatters her contented life.
Clara grew up believing that her mother’s family had disowned them. But now the grandmother she never knew is on her deathbed and anxious to disclose vital family secrets before it’s too late—for Clara’s unborn child may be cursed with a horrible fate.
When Clara and her husband, Atticus, arrive at dismal Thurnley Hall, they find intrigue brewing. Her boorish uncle, Horace Burleigh, is greedy for her wealth and desperate to protect the family’s mysteries. Superstitious fear of Atticus torments the hulking Romanian servant, Grigore, and even the soft-spoken young ward, Victor Lynch, may have secret motives for getting close to Clara and her husband.
When her grandmother dies under suspicious circumstances, Clara feels compelled to investigate. And when Atticus vanishes mysteriously, she must draw on all her strength and determination to find him before his time runs out… before her life can be cursed once more.
Fans of the Gothic romances of Victoria Holt, Mary Stewart, and Barbara Michaels won't want to miss this thrilling, romantic sequel to With This Curse, in which Clara faces new challenges and dangers. Just Book Talk gives Cursed Once More five stars and calls it “another exciting adventure . . . [with] a rich cast of spooky and strange characters.” And be sure not to miss Nocturne for a Widow, in which Clara's former employer, vivacious actress Sybil Ingram, is plunged into adventure in a haunted house in the Hudson River Valley.

About the author

Atlanta author Amanda DeWees wrote her doctoral dissertation on 19th-century vampire literature, the perfect training (although she didn’t realize it at the time) for writing Victorian gothic romance novels. These include With This Curse, which won the 2015 Daphne du Maurier Award for historical mystery/suspense, and Sea of Secrets, a reimagining of Shakespeare’s Hamlet that won the 2012 RONE award in mystery. Her other works include the Ash Grove Chronicles, a young adult paranormal romance series set in modern-day North Carolina.
Besides writing, Amanda's passions include theater, movies, costume design, and Chris Evans, not necessarily in that order. Visit her at www.amandadewees.com for book extras and other delightful diversions.

Let’s start with Atticus. He is a wonderful husband and thinks about Clara is everything he does. He treats her as his equal and would fight to the death for her. When he goes missing you can’t help but feel his loss. He is a force to be reckoned with.
Clara has her worries about meeting her Mother’s family. Who wouldn’t. And to add to the pressure surrounding her is the pregnancy, of which she hasn’t told Atticus. Clara knows her Uncle is hiding much more then the loss of money in there home and when Atticus goes missing her world gets turned upside down.
This book adds a new curse. One that not only affects Clara and Atticus, but their unborn child. As always with Amanda’s book you are drawn into her world. She tells the story like no other. Victorian Gothic has a new Queen.

This story is the sequel to With This Curse: A Novel of Victorian Romantic Suspense . There's enough catch-up in this one that you could read it as a standalone but you may understand the main characters better by reading both #1 and #2.
Ordinarily in a traditional Victorian Gothic you have a poor, lonely, orphaned heroine set down in a gloomy, mysterious setting, with a gloomy, mysterious brooding hero who may or may not be trustworthy. Well, we got all that mistrust between H and h out of the way in the first book, so here the hero and heroine are very happily married with a relationship solid enough that there are no stupid relationship misunderstandings. The threats to the couple's happiness come from outside sources.
When out of the blue Clara receives a letter from uncle and grandmother she has never met, with an invitation to visit them, she decides to accept, hoping to find out more about her family background and more about her deceased mother's early life. Although she feels resentment about their neglect when she and her mother were in dire straits, she still hopes they may give her some explanation of their actions. So she and husband Atticus (a truly lovely man) set out for the visit.
They arrive at an appropriately creepy, gloomy estate full of strange and creepy people. Shortly into the visit there's a mysterious death and it's impossible to find anyone slightly worthy of trust. Atticus and Clara are surrounded by strangely behaved people not given to being forthcoming with any information.
This has some truly suspenseful moments when someone we actually care about disappears and there are lots of secrets and lies that come out as the story progresses. It was great fun to read this, even though most of the characters, except for Atticus and Clara, were quite over-the-top.

It is not a classic or a Shakespearian great, it is just a very easy relaxing read. The plot has a few twists and turns and I loved every minute of reading it

'Cursed Once More' takes place in Clara's ancestral home. Clara is invited to stay and meet her family and she is determined to find out as much as possible about them and her parents. However, there is more to this family reunion than meets the eye. Her grandmother alludes to a terrible family secret but is murdered before she gets the opportunity to divulge any useful information.
Clara's relatives are stranger than Atticus's family and it isn't long before Clara seriously considers certain members of the household of being a cold blooded murderer. The killer has to be caught before they strike again.
There is a rich cast of spooky and strange characters in 'Cursed Once More.' The crumbling, dreary old mansion and the local people's fear of Clara's Romanian relatives, heavily influenced by vampire lore, lend a moody feel to the story.
