Tom Taylor is not my favorite writer, actually I didn't like this story. But I don't want to sound like got this comic to bash him, therefore I am not scoring it with two stars but three stars to not be unfair. I didn't like it because to me is just Marvel Zombies. It has the mysterious technological device from another world unleashing the chaos by infecting one superhero... Is the same! o.O

A Compelling Start

I’ve been REALLY hard on DC lately, giving out a bunch of two star and even a one star review, and as a lifelong fan I wanted to find something good. I was excited to see that Tom Taylor has returned to DC because I’ve enjoyed what he’s produced in the past. Taylor is a writer who can actually write entertaining dialogue unlike writers like Brian Michael Bendis and Scott Snyder who are insufferable. The description of DCeased sounded like a DC version of Marvel Zombies except in this case the cause of the infection is the Anti-Life equation. This would not be the first story where Darkseid attained the Anti-Life equation, but Taylor is writing this story out of Canon so he’s free to do as he pleases. It’s clear from the beginning that this is not a canonized story. Desaad looks completely different and we have the death of a major DC character.

Currently, DCeased has a 7.8 aggregate score on Comic Book Roundup on 34 reviews and an 8.5 User Rating. Those scores seem reasonable although I’m amused by the two perfect 10 scores and miserable 3.0. This is not Watchmen nor is it garbage. This is a compelling start for a mini series that may or may not be amazing, featuring some rather mediocre art. I’m assuming since we’re not in Canon that there is going to be a lot of deaths and it looks like they’re going to be gruesome but this is nothing new. Taylor has already explored the deaths of popular characters in a non-canon story with his work on Injustice.

The only thing that compelled me to pick this comic up was the involvement of Tom Taylor. My local comic shop didn’t even bother to order this comic so I had to drive a distance to a larger shop. I assume this was a story that Taylor pitched and wanted to write so I’m assuming he has a plan beyond just writing a story with gory deaths. Even if that is the plan, Taylor can elevate just about any story so I have faith in his ability to deliver. Good Start. We’ll see where it goes.
