4.0 out of 5 stars The OTT humour puts me off, but it’s still a great and fun read
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 10, 2021
First of all, it’s a lovely detail comic book. A nice hardback with nice thick pages. You get sketches and variants in the back.
Now to the story...
This is a follow on from DCeased (DC’s version of Marvel Zombies)
and I just love the idea and concept of using characters that are usually overlooked for various reasons taking the spotlight.
This isn’t as strong as the first DCeased, which is fine. The art is lovely, but the story, mainly the writing and dialogue is kind of hammy in some areas for me...
I’ll explain further, I’ll call them ‘Taylorisms’ to make it simplified.
Taylor’s writing is littered with odd humour. Sometimes it’s subtle and sometimes satirical... Like a character being cheesy in his dialogue and pointing out the obvious or keep rabbiting away to add humour to a scene. Now, these ‘Taylorisms’ are more and more and it can become tedious at times. Like banter between characters and it’s littered with Taylorisms with modern banter and jokey dialogue in an apocalypse...
I don’t mind humour when it’s done well, but these jokes are cheesy banter is re-used it gets tedious and especially if you’ve read a majority of his work then it becomes irritating.
I don’t mind humour as I said, but I feel Taylor is trying to inject humour like the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe if you didn’t know that already) does and it just does not need it. This line of humour works for The Suicide Squad but these misfit characters are mostly serious and they’re wearing annoying clothes and talking about theme tunes like a parody just falls sort of flat and it loosens me connecting with the story.
In that sense I deducted a star because as I said these Taylorisms are irritating, but he does a good story if you can get passed these irritations.
The art and fight scenes and emotions can be felt in the art. The colours are superb.
DCEASED Dead Planet comes next and I hope the tedious humour is lightened (That is just my preference by the way and I’m sure some will agree with me) but I can’t wait.
This story has been one of the best and semi-original ideas I’ve read in sometime.
I hope we can see other heroes and bad guys fighting to survive in the future.
So, I’ve waffled on enough.
All in all, great art, great story, roll of the eyes humour but still a smashing story. I won’t and haven’t spoilt the story and I hope you find my review helpful.
Thanks for reading.
