For those expecting one of Robert Caro’s definitive tomes, be aware that this is not a book. It is an excerpt from Passage to Power that details the climactic moment of that passage. Despite or maybe because of all his trademark mundane detail, Caro manages to create the electric sensation of actually being there as the fateful events of the Kennedy assassination unfold in real time. It's like virtual embedded journalism applied to a time before it existed.
If the amount of time and pages the author has devoted to Johnson didn’t already make it obvious, it is clear even from this small sample that he has a deep admiration for his subject. All aspects of his personality and actions are filtered through this bias. In the hands of a lesser writer this may have caused some distortion of history. But in this case, the facts are so meticulously detailed that the slightly indulgent perspective comes across as a compassionate fairness.
