“A page-turner that will pull on your heartstrings and affirm your faith in humanity.” ―Karen McQuestion, bestselling author of Hello Love
From the bestselling author of Wish Me Home comes a heart-racing tale of resilience and hope.
When Sadie Harlan visits her daughter, Lauren, at her summer internship in Yosemite National Park, it seems like the perfect way to forget about her empty nest and failing marriage back home. But when the two women get lost on what’s meant to be a short hike, they suddenly find themselves fighting for their lives.
As they search for food, water, and civilization, they battle injury, exhaustion, and natural predators. Sadie, however, is assaulted by more than just the unforgiving elements. She lost her first child years earlier in a tragic accident, and in her sorrow, she’s pushed everyone away―including her husband. Now, Sadie must face her past through a journey of love, loss, and learning to forgive herself if she and Lauren are to stand a chance at getting out of Yosemite alive.
Will a mother’s courage be enough to save them both?

I was reading Dancing with the Sun. I had just started Chapter 18 (the final chapter before the Epilogue) before going to sleep. My Wife came in to go to bed so I put the book away for the night. It wasn't easy, but I put the book down. Then my oldest Daughter came in and started talking to Mom. I picked the book up and started reading again.
I only read two pages (BIG MISTAKE) and realized I wasn't going to put the book down again until I read it all. I COULDN'T PUT THE BOOK DOWN. I just had to know the ending. The suspense was too great and I would never be able to sleep. I told my Wife and Daughter I was going into the Family Room to finish the book. I just wished I had thought to bring some tissues. An hour or so later the novel was finished. I was fulfilled. Kay Bratt had done it again!!
Well done. Beautiful. Touching. Magnificent. A story of hope. Wow! Wow!!! Dancing with the Sun shows that Kay Bratt gives her all to her readers. Thank you Kay for another great read!!
I was an advanced reader for this book and I definitely recommend it to all my bookworm friends! https://amzn.to/2MmcP8K.
Their hike begins normally but before too long a storm comes up and in their haste to escape it and find some type of cover, they get horribly lost. Lauren has survival skills but she’s injured. Sadie has no survival skills but she has something even more important going for her - the fierceness of a Mother protecting her young. What transpires during their time of being lost is a time of being found - a mother finding a way to a new relationship with her long awaited for adopted daughter; a daughter finding a way to break down the walls of isolation and finally establishing the relationship she’s always longed for; a mother finding the way to allow her heart to mend and see all the wonderful possibilities in her future; a daughter finding her way to assure her Mother that she will always be there for her; and the two of them finding a way out of the forest in spite of Mother Nature, wildlife, no food or water.
I was provided an ARC of this book by Lake Union Publishers. The opinions expressed here are completely my own and without influence.
What angered me most was the complete ignorance of the setting. Why choose Yosemite when the author obviously never has been to this place? The happenings in this novel take place in March - I wonder how they were able to get to Olmsted Point in March? Tioga Road is closed until at least the middle of April, often longer. It is impossible to see the climbers getting up Half Dome from Olmsted Point with the naked eye, never mind that the cables aren't even up in March. Just walk to Tenaya Lake because it's only a short walk? In the high country? In Keds? And no mentioning of snow, in March. And so it goes on and on. Realistically the two wouldn't have survived the first night. It is so obvious that the author doesn't know Yosemite at all. I wonder why she hadn't chosen a place closer to home that she might know a little bit better. Yosemite was just used as a dramatic background for a very melodramatic story.

Sadie makes a spur of the moment decision to visit Lauren who is doing an internship at Yosemite. Lauren is eager to show her a lake in the park and they set off totally ill-equipped for what should be an easy hike. However, a storm breaks, they [and Lauren's phone] get soaked. Almost inevitably they get lost and in the struggle to cope with the challenges, Sadie experiences a personal epiphany through reflection, deep talks with Lauren and through being faced with almost a life/death situation. Fortunately there is a happy outcome at many levels.
