Editorial Reviews
Review
Knee-deep in projects, back to the wall sofa, and looking for a couple of hours of romantic escape, it was perfect synchronicity when the opportunity to read Dangerous Intentions, the first book in a suspense romance series from C.D. Samuda, landed in my lap.
While I have my preferred genres, I'm always open to reading new ones and with her sizable catalog of mystery, suspense, and thriller titles- I knew I'd be in good hands.
Since I'm not a book reviewer by trade it's probably best to start with the things I personally look for in a romance novel; Immersion, Dialogue, Character Development, and Chemistry.
If those four things are there, I'll generally enjoy the ride and fortunately Dangerous Intentions hits the right marks in my key areas.
Immersion
For me, contemporary settings really need to be vibrant to get my attention and the author does this with a flourish that makes you feel as if you're really stepping into a bustling, complex, world that could easily fit into our own.
From the first few pages, the reader is instantly pulled into scenes that are described with attention to detail and ambience as we're introduced to Gage Wilder, an established business and family man framed for murder by someone he trusts. Themes of betrayal, revenge, and redemption are woven with those of faith, hope, and renewal in the heroine Rayne, a woman nursing a dangerous secret and a broken heart.
This effortlessly constructed tapestry forms the backdrop for the fast-paced, action packed, twists and turns to come and you can't help but root for the characters as their story unfolds.
Dialogue
Punchy, sharp, and laced with sex appeal for readers who like a little more bite to their romance fiction. This isn't the story to read if you need purple prose and professions of love with over the top flourish from the start. CD's heroine and hero are gritty, realistic, love interests nursing old wounds that require healing and the reader is taken along on that journey.
Character Development
It's difficult to describe the character development without giving too much away but there are no Gary or Mary Sues to be found here. Complex, haunted, characters beset by their own fears and surrounded by manipulation creates a simmering atmosphere the reader can't help but empathize with.
Chemistry
I love a good push/pull dynamic in the romances I read, and Gage and Rayne definitely deliver on that front. We (the reader) are coming in at the beginning of a reconciliation but it's impossible to deny the desire that remains between the protagonists and that passion is conveyed in the insanely hot encounters sprinkled throughout the book.
This was a blast to read and I finished it within two nights. The story does end on a cliffhanger but not in that jarring way where you feel like you're being cut off mid-scene. I'm genuinely excited to see how Gage and Rayne's relationship develops.
All in all, I enjoyed Dangerous Intentions and if you're in the mood for something new, I would head over to Amazon to scoop it up."~ Dani Morrison, Author
