The Dark Before the Light continues the adventures of the Midnight Sun Free Company. The supporting cast has grown, and the reader almost needs a score card to keep track of everyone. In spite of the large cast of characters, the book flows nicely and quickly, was fun to read, and very entertaining. There was plenty of action, subterfuge, intrigue, mayhem, and plenty of secrets. It is apparent the Goltar have been plotting their return to open active players in the universe for some time. A little more is revealed about their long range plans. The Endless Night do appear to be slinking off into the back waters of the galaxy. Tim Taylor has written a wonderful novel and I look forward to the next book in the series.

Out of the frying pan and into the fryer. Been having a bad day ? Try having a bad year. Temporary allies, schemes within schemes, and enough twists and turns to make you really dizzy. The Midnight Sun Company was created for a unique purpose, yet constantly find themselves split up, working different angles to an ever changing and increasingly complex puzzle in which few things are obviously clear. The ones that are count for a lot though. Saving the galaxy, rescuing friends, stopping enemies, and somehow try to stay alive and intact. If it was easy, anyone could do it. This is even difficult for Midnight Sun to pull off, and they do nearly impossible, really well. Buckle up and get ready for a wild ride.

The author has written another 4 Horsemen related book and it too was a difficult read. Difficult because the author is trying too hard to show and convince the reader of the utter alien-ness of the characters. I get it. They are aliens and think differently. A sentient tentacled parrot beaked octopus won't think the same as a muskrat. OK. Don't drag it out. Detailed background descriptions of thought processes are just boring whether it be alien or pinplanted Asians who have a godlike complex.

In this case the story is about more aliens than humans and for me it was shifting alliegances all the time. Towards the end things kind of cleared but then there wasn't a clear ending, more of a cliff hanger. I came away feeling I was missing something... Your mileage may vary...
