The story seems to be a “hero’s quest”, revolving around Dash and his friends. So far it’s been a big scavenger hunt with some battles, where the hero barely defeats the enemy (just to add some excitement I guess.) However, the title says this is a “Military Scifi Epic”; There is no military to speak of, involved so far. There are no fleets of ships shooting each other, no armies slugging it on the ground, etc. And one on one fights are not really epic.
Also, there is too much introspection, speculation and explanation. This is fine during the downtime between action sequences. But when it happens during the “action” part of the book, the story becomes “draggy” and the action sequence tends to be a bit boring. I can actually put the book down during an “action” sequence and go do something else before bothering to pick up the book again. This book therefore, is far from gripping.
There are also some story holes. For example, the Archetype was parked on a planet and then suddenly Dash is on his way to it, in the Forge in the Slipwing. How did the Archetype move from the planet to the Forge. This seems to be a case where one author picks up the story from another and somehow does not follow through on the storyline.
There are places where characters are saying something when they are not even there and a lot of grammatical mistakes.
(allegedly, pending upgrade) Omnipotent mech, reluctant pilot, quirky onboard AI, motley crew to go along. Boxes ticked.
And they just don't resonate with me. Very hard to care for their journey... or, more like it, their long and arduous fedex quests with boring and disconnected set-pieces.
The result is a boring mech book. I surely hope the story would pick up some steam after vol. 1. It did not.
Read at your own peril.
Honestly I think I this series would make a great movie..
It has a real Michael Bay meets Gundam feel, and i am here for it.

Don't get me wrong, I don't expect a smooth ride, or easy solution. But can't the good guys win sometimes without the titanic struggles and catastrophic damage every time.
When I read the first book in this series, I really thought it was going to be epic, enthralling, exciting and full of meaningful discoveries. But no, the poor guys keep getting the crap knocked out of them.
I fully understand and realize that struggles and fighting for survival should make up part of this story. Just don't keep making it excessively so. It needs lightening up somewhat.
I have no doubt many of you will disagree with my comments or sentiments. But it is just my opinion. It is a good story when all is said and done.
I have been reading sci-fi from the age of 13 years. Starting with the series, Kemlo and the space cadets. Fifty three years and still counting, having read thousands of sci-fi books.

The characters and relationships developing quickly, which given there are 15 books is welcomed.
Book 3 may just have to wait now as book 8 of Backyard Starship just landed....
