Review
“A multiversal superhero epic… A strong foundation for the upcoming miniseries.” —A.V. Club
“Each prelude issue to DC’s new mega event is crazier than the one that came before… All kinds of crazy.” —Nerdist
“If you’re going to do an explosive saga, then you better pack your biggest guns. Guns don’t get much bigger than Snyder, Lee, Romita Jr., and Kubert.” —Comicosity

About the author

I write comic books! Growing up, I always wanted to write comics, but I ended up trying my hand at fiction first. I got my MFA from Columbia University, published a book of short stories with The Dial Press in 2006 called Voodoo Heart, then finally broke into comics in 2009 and haven't looked back since. I've worked extensively for DC Comics, writing such titles as Batman, Detective Comics, Justice League, the comic event books DC Dark Knights Metal and Death Metal, and Swamp Thing, among others. I've also created a number of series with some great co-creators and partners -- books like We Have Demons, Clear, Night of the Ghoul, Nocterra, American Vampire, Wytches, the Wake, AD: After Death, and more... I live in NY with my wife, Jeanie and our three boys. I am also a big fan of Elvis Presley.

Enjoy.
On the flipside, the rest of the book is a smattering of Final Crisis, (The Return of Bruce Wayne?), Endgame, and Nightwing that will leave you scratching your head. If you're a person who needs extra background, this will confuse the hell out of you even more. And if you're like me, and you actually read all of those previously, you'll go "okay, I guess that was a refresher of sorts," but it's too jarring to really enhance your understanding or enjoyment of Metal.
TL;DR-The first two issues have new info, but don't justify the purchase. The rest of the book is a messy, hard to follow collection of previous stories.

The extended material in this collection offer context to the main themes of the impending “dark crisis” teases within the preludes, as well as pointers to clues sprinkled throughout Snyder’s New 52 run on Batman, around whom the event is primarily going to unfold. For those already invested invested in collecting DC comics’ greatest outings, the issues ripped from Final Crisis and The Return of Bruce Wayne (both by Grant Morrison of Bat-defining repute) will likely be repeats in your collection. In spite of this, I found the inclusion of these issues to be interesting for the purpose of teasing what themes will be explored, and what history will be expanded upon, in the upcoming event. For those up to date on New-52-and-beyond material for Batman and the Bat-family, the other issues included will likely be repeats, but again offer clues to what the upcoming event will cover, especially those clues embedded within Snyder’s run on Batman.
Overall, while the preludes are the only explicitly “new” material included in this collection, for those excited to delve into the Dark Nights: Metal event, this edition will offer insight, context, and teases into the “dark crisis” to come, all wrapped up in a high-quality hardcover with a snazzy foil dust-cover.

If I was going to rate the Forge and the Casting I would have given this 4 stars because the artwork was great, lots of guest stars but a little lacking in the action department for me.
I really did not like Final Crisis, it felt too rushed to me and I am not a fan of the DC terminology that I had the buy ever DC book at the time to fully understand every aspect of it. Though I was happy Batman got a decisive role in it. The Return of Bruce Wayne was a better storyline for me, but this only contained issue 1 of the six part mini series. I saw the thin thread to Metal in it but still not impressed.
Towards the end, I get Batman Endgame part 4 and 5, then Nightwing 17? Why was the last story there? I would have preferred if they swapped that one for the Endgame part 6. Why not give the ending to the Endgame which does relates Metal instead of a story of the first and last Robin arguing about their legacy?
The final story though short I really. It reminded me who Tom/Red Robin is my fave as far as the Robins go. Also shows his is the closest one to actually be able to think like Batman/Bruce Wayne.
A good beginning and ending, but no matter how they relate not my favorite Batman stories in the middle. I did like the variant covers at the end of every issue. It. Oils have been better but an overall OK.

It’s also like they put it in there to make the whole book bigger and look full. I get it, but kinda wanted more.
