The Dark Kindle Edition
THERE SHALL COME OVER THE WHOLE EARTH,
AN INTENSE DARKNESS LASTING THREE DAYS AND THREE NIGHTS.
Miah Gray is a twenty-seven-year-old, former Army soldier living in rural New Hampshire with his sister, mother, and her boyfriend. He is plagued by PTSD, finding solace, but not redemption, with the aid of prescribed cannabis. All he wants to do is get high, relax with a good sandwich, and watch a meteor shower with his neighborhood crush--Jen.
HE WHO OPENS HIS WINDOW OR DOOR OUT OF CURIOSITY,
OR LEAVES HIS HOME, WILL FALL DEAD ON THE SPOT.
But when the sun's light is blotted out the following morning, and the world is plunged into darkness, Miah finds himself locked down with his family, covering windows with trash bags, lighting candles, and following the arcane rules of an ancient prophecy. But there is no escaping what comes next.
THE AIR WILL BE INFECTED BY DEMONS,
APPEARING IN ALL SORTS OF HIDEOUS FORMS.
A brilliant flash of light fills the sky, leaving Miah changed, and an Old Norse death rune etched onto his forehead. He fears he has been marked for death until the neighborhood's parents start disappearing, and he's left behind. Leading Jen and a ragtag group of parentless kids, Miah hunts for answers and for their parents, while trying to keep his sister safe. He charges headlong down a path that will take him to the gates of Hell--and then straight through.
ALL OF HELL WILL BE LET LOOSE.
The Dark is a mind-bending and character driven sci-fi-infused horror novel like no other.

When considering whether to write a new series of novels, Robinson decided it would be more fun to create a universe of interconnected and overlapping novels that coalesce into a single, mind-bendingly epic story. The Infinite Timeline brings together eight standalone novels, first as three smaller crossovers, and then all together for one grand finale featuring favorite characters such as Wini, Cowboy, Dark Horse, Henry, Miah, Bree, and more! From the Author
This concept, of neural pathways being rewired when illness and stressful life events overlap, is new to me, and it's very interesting, so I decided to put Miah, in The Dark, through analogous experiences, processing along with him in a way that I think anyone with a chronic illness, PTSD, or a shred of empathy can understand. Does that mean The Dark is an angst-filled whine-fest? Not at all. Miah faces his issues as I attempt to: head-on, with good humor, and with a hope that the future will be better. He even explores some options that I have yet to try. His unique perspective on pain and life makes him the perfect character to follow through the twisted events that unfold in The Dark, mirroring what it's like living with chronic illness, whether that be physical, mental, or both.
Hell on Earth? Some people live it, and fight against it, already. Should the actual denizens of the underworld rise up, unleashing their tortures upon humanity, those who have already endured pain--day and night--might be exactly what the world needs.

But then The Dark came out. When it was first announced, I was super excited. After reading Infinite 2, I became worried it was going to be a let down. So I started this being cautiously optimistic. And I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it.
The first half of the book to me was really slow. Yes, it was interesting with the darkness and people disappearing. This was advertised as a horror novel, but honestly I was never scared by any of it. Part of the reason was the main character's humor. Robinson has always had a healthy dose of humor in his books, but this was seemed like "throw every joke at the wall and see what sticks". I realize the main character Miah was trying to use humor to cope with what he was going through, but it took away from the "horror" and at some times, was outright misplaced and annoying.
The final act of the book really saved it for me. The action was awesome, even though it seemed a bit too much of a Hollywood ending considering the odds they were facing. Miah's literal and mental transformations were great and made sense. He started out as a weird and annoying person but eventually turned into a true hero. The epilogue was entertaining as always and made me want more.
While this book isn't as good as the Nemesis saga or the Chess Team novels, it's a close second. I'm hoping Robinson continues to make novels this good and stays away from some of the duds he's put out in recent years.
If you do read it I hope that you enjoy it as much as I did!
Miah (Nehemiah) is not your typical protagonist. He is 27 years old, former Army fairly crippled with PTSD that medicates with measures of cannabis gummies, lives with his mom, her boyfriend, and his sister in a McMansion suburb in rural New Hampshire and is NOT prepared at all when the sky goes dark, people start disappearing, and monsters start appearing.
I loved Miah's character and I loved that I did not see the direction this story was going and it surprised me quite a few times.
This is the most unique story I've read for quite a long time and I highly recommend it.
I'm now off to read THE DISTANCE by this same author along with his wife Hilaree Robinson, which I've had for a while and decided it just might be time to read.

Miah is drawn into an horrific fight for survival.
Jeremy Robinson is not your typical author. He writes with humour, compassion and humanity. His books are, without fail, well written, perfectly executed, and thought provoking. His characters are flawed and complex, his stories mind bending, and fast paced. If i didnt have to eat and sleep i would have put this book down once I'd picked it up. Am going to book time off work when his next comes out.
Buy this and any other JR books and you will not be disappointed, not matter what you like, as he pulls you in and won’t let you go!
I did find the main characters constant witty comments a bit wearing at first but, I have to say, he did grow on me as the story progressed.
Nice mix of Zombie meets aliens meets religion, and plenty of action to keep you interested.
I've just purchased another novel from the same author and am hoping this is as entertaining.
Laugh out loud in places and very emotional at others. Also, it wouldn't be a Jeremy Robinson novel if there wasn't references to his other works of fiction. Plus a crossover appearance of a couple of characters from a previous book leaves the "gate" open for a sequel... I know that can't wait!!
