As for the story, though an easy read, it is weak and seems to be focused on how nepotism affects even mediocre officers who are related to the ruling body. The new main character Morgan gets a promoted at the beginning of the book since she has clearance for the classified data, and then later in the book a family friend who is a rear admiral promotes her again for doing her job. Everyone else sees what is going on but Morgan who is clueless as to why she is being promoted but has no problem reminding everyone around her that she can influence admirals by stepping outside the chain-of-command because of who she is. Another weakness to the story is the fact that the new enemy does not leave any live bodies behind and no way for the protagonists to actually learn about their enemy except that they are tough and they are currently and always outnumbered and always behind in many technological aspects.
If you ignore all those problems, it isn't a bad continuation of the Duchy of Terra series and gives the reader some ideas of what has happened over the last few years.
It is hard to write military space opera that is not dishonest. The genre calls for the enemy to have an overwhelming advantage - and to lose. This generally requires the enemy to make a lot of bad decisions. The weakness of this book is that it focuses on space battles that are manipulated by the author to be close but to have the desired outcomes.
Within those constraints, a fun space romp.
setting, some 15 years after the events in the previous series.
Now part of the A!Tol empire long enough that young humans tend to
say "we", Earth is a respected contributor, and the Duchy fleet is
second only to the Imperial fleets. New colonies of humans (largely:
Any Imperial citizen who wishes to settle can, of course) are being
started and things are going well.
Until suddenly they aren't, and attacks done at Core Power levels
are made on the new colonies. Is it the Kanzi? Relations with the
slaver power known to be holding many humans in that state have
never been good, and the ships, while more powerful than any known
seem to have Kanzi aesthetics. But the Kanzi theocracy claims to
know nothing about it, and now *their* fringe colonies are being
hit. Even the Mesharom, the eldest Core Power have themselves been
hit, a truly terrifying development. Will the Empire and Theocracy
have to make common cause? Will the Empire become a Core Power?
Thrown into the middle of all this is Morgan Casimir, a young Duchy
fleet officer, and daughter of the Duchess.
I thought this was an entertaining entry in Stewart's milsf setting.
The cast are mainly types, but fairly well written types.
The original cast is not wholly absent, but largely offscreen while
events in space unfold. The Mesharom interactions were an interesting
addition, and I wonder if that ancient race might come out of its shell
just a little bit.
Darkness beyond is an awesome addition to the duchy of terra series, a spinoff in its own right the story continues in this new series as a new but familiar character takes the reigns of the story. light of terra is the first in a promising series of books that will continue the story of Terra into a new conflict.
this was a fantastic book, i love how we meet familiar faces in these spinoffs, if i was to name a donside it would be that there are some tired tropes present in the story, mainly how certain characters interact with each other, but overall the book is enjoyable and interesting.
a promising new entry in the series.

Note: I received a free electronic copy in exchange for an unbiased review (but liked it enough to buy a copy anyway)
There are plenty of detailed battles, and well thought out tactics. I cannot wait for the sequel
An enthralling read and I look forward to reading the rest
I'd suggest any of this authors books for anyone who likes sci-fi with a touch of space opera.
