Dave, A Perfect President
Verified purchase
Dave, played by Kevin Kline, is as a president should be. Thoughtful, sympathetic, a man with integrity and a great sense of humor.

The man Dave replaced was corrupt and engaged in fraudulent activities unknown to Dave. The real president had a severe stroke. Dave, who looked exactly like the president, with charm and ease became the president, and started to fulfill many presidential duties much to the annoyance of the Chief of Staff, Bob Alexander, who is seeking to be named Vice President, and eventually president. However, Alexander was involved in the many nefarious deeds with the actual president.

The president's wife, played by Sigourney Weaver, hates her husband, because she knows he is a womanizer, but comes to admire this new president whom she eventually realizes is not her husband.

What ensures is incredible. Watch this film. It's worth your time. The cast is outstanding.

I LOVE this film

To be clear: I LOVE this film! I actually have a copy somewhere, but misplaced it, and wanted to watch with a friend, so ordered it on here. What I DIDN'T like was the quality of the streaming copy. It's supposed to be HD, but looks like it was dubbed off a VHS tape. Also, the sound was 'off' from the video here and there, which is very distracting, esp. during close dialogue. I would go as far as to request a credit, it was so bad, but there's no device for that on here. I recommend buying a copy of this on blu ray, or even DVD, it's that good of a film. We all wish we had a president like this in real life!

Washington needs a lot more Daves running the country.

Amazon Prime was charging $3.99 for this movie so I watched "The Candidate" instead and liked it but it wasn't this movie. I eventually broke down and paid to see "Dave" and I am not sorry I did. This movie, starring Kevin Kline as both the president and the president's stand in when the real deal has a stroke and is unable to do the job, is lighthearted and fun but also has elements of how cutthroat many people in the government are and how far they are willing to go to get what they want.

Dave is an everyday, caring, honest guy sucked into a world of pretense. He manages to avoid being corrupted himself and stands up for what he believes in. Although the story line really isn't fresh or new and wasn't even in the 90's, it was all played out well with a great mix of comedy, humility, and, for me, a little bit of emotion. "I would have taken a bullet for you, Dave." *weep*

It's definitely a movie worth watching particularly during this crazy time of politics gone mad. You will wish all politicians were like Dave. I sure do!

I've owned this movie in VHS for a long time and finally bought a DVD copy. I love the story of the evil president who has a severe stroke while having an affair with his secretary. The FBI brings in a look alike to pretend to run the country while the chief of staff plots a take over. There are times when I believe a non-politician would do a better job - and this movie shows how it could be done. There's even a scene where the president's wife discovers Dave isn't her real husband. That's funny.

Seems to be a pirated copy

There' nothing about this that makes you think it might be an authorized version of a great movie. The paper inserted into the clear plastic outside cover gives the appearance of it, but the container itself doesn't, and the DVD doesn't have anything printed on it. Plus it wouldn't play in our DVD player. I quickly put it back in the container and took it and the copy of In & Out I'd ordered from the same folks, back to the local Amazon returns center. If, however, you can find a REAL, authorized version of "Dave" or "In & Out," both are terrific, fun films and I highly recommend them.

Its one of the best movies I've ever seen and I've seen it numerous times. It always makes me smile and feel good. Great writing, acting and everything you could ask for in a movie to watch at home with your loved ones. It reminds me alot of another movie, The American President but its a funnier movie with Keven Kline stealing the show.

My discontent is not with the movie. My unhappiness is with the vendor. As with so many DVDs, they are sent in these bubble bags. Not damage proof in my opinion. When I took out the dvd from the bag, I noticed that the dvd was sliding around inside the case. This concerned me. When I opened the case the dvd was totally blank on both sides. There was no label, no name to tell you what it was. That really surprised me because it was supposed to be a new DVD. Fortunately it doesn't appear to be damaged. On first review it seems to be OK, but it doesn't give the appearance of a new DVD. I am concerned how long it will hold up.

As good or better than any of Frank Capra's films.

This is as close to a perfect film as you are ever likely to see. It's inspiring, funny, touching - everything you would want in a film. It’s just a crime that it was only nominated for one Oscar and two Golden Globes, and didn't win any. It's also funny that so many politicos and reporters were happy to appear in it. It's on my list of the 100 best movies.
