At 11 p.m. Friday night, February 12, we lost power.
In bed, I listened to ice sliding and branches breaking and crashing to the ground. Saturday morning, we discovered our maple tree had split and part of it had fallen over my car—over and around, but not on, so thankfully there was no damage. Ken hacked that part of the tree up so we could get out and made sure nothing else had fallen dangerously.

Blog postThe evening before Halloween, I was standing in the kitchen with the Lodger when I heard a cat peep.
Now, three of our cats peep, one screams (she’s deaf), and one doesn’t make a noise (she tries to miaow and makes a sibilant hiss—it’s very adorable).
This peep, however, sounded as if it was coming from outside. The Lodger said they had been hearing a similar noise throughout the day. So we called Ken from his office in the basement and went outside to see what was going on. T5 months ago Read more

Among Mercedes Lackey’s many novels, few are as critically acclaimed and beloved as those about the Elemental Masters. The novels in this series are loosely based on classic fairy tales, and take place in a fantasy version of turn-of-the-century London, where magic is real and Elemental Masters control the powers of Fire, Water, Air, and Earth. Now other authors join Mercedes Lackey to add their own special touches to this delightful alternate history, in a world where magic is always just around the corner...

In March 1987, Mercedes Lackey, a young author from Oklahoma, published her first novel, Arrows of the Queen. No one could have envisioned that this modest book would be the beginning of a fantasy career that would span decades and more than a hundred novels, with no signs of slowing yet.

What do women want? A voice. To be heard. Respect. To be believed. Justice. To be both safe and free. The women in these stories have daughters, sisters, friends. The minister worries about her parishioners. The banshee worries about the Hippocratic Oath. The microbiologist worries about her obligation to the dead. They will use any means to protect themselves and those they love: a childish jingle, a skillet full of cornbread, a candle, their own quick wits. We cannot ignore their voices.
This anthology is a treasure. Empowering, inspirational, and sometimes wickedly funny. Timely fiction like this provides a special kind of justice giving not only insight and empathy but a new strength to voices that must be heard. - Nationally bestselling author of Trust Me and The Murder List --Hank Phillippi Ryan
Elizabeth Zelvin has put together a strong collection that reminds us as if we ever need reminding how the daily lives of women can be affected by the conduct of calculating or even careless men. The characters in these stories will challenge, surprise, and inspire you. - New York Times bestselling author of The Better Sister --Alafair Burke
A soul-satisfying anthology of justice and revenge, expertly edited by Elizabeth Zelvin. Each story is a standout in its own way. If the deepest truths are revealed through fiction, then this anthology goes further, reflecting our own lives back and showing us how to live them just a bit better. - USA Today bestselling author of Cover of Snow and Wicked River --Jenny Milchman

Everyone faces dark times. Everyone looks for a light to get through. These fifteen stories show teen heroes/heroines using creativity and heart to find their inner “spark” to overcome adversity, evil, or ignorance. In this anthology for all ages, join a girl who struggles to accept the zombie working at her school, a second-rate superhero who might just have what it takes after all, and a young magic-user who must decide whether to break the rules to save the day. These compelling young heroes/heroines prove sometimes it simply takes a spark to light a fire in the darkness.

Superstitions pervade every culture and belief system. Often, the origins of such superstitions elude their practitioners. The seventeen authors in this latest volume of Fiction River create their own superstitious tales in fascinating stories ranging from dark and moody to light and fun, from introspective and thought-provoking to high-ratcheted tension. Distinct and realistic elements of humanity, love, fear, family, friendship, life, and death provide unforgettable experiences that prove we all practice some form of superstition, whether we admit it or not. “…fertile imaginations take these ideas to wild and wonderful directions.”—Astro Guyz
