Unique, original zombie drama...and so much more!

Ever heard of a zombie story where the zombies aren’t only brain-dead, blood-thirsty monsters? One told largely from the perspective of two zombies? Two zombies who are in love and separated across a vast distance in the middle of the world collapse?

I hadn’t either, and the thought never crossed my mind that I ever would, but Eleanor Merry has delivered just such a story, a hybrid of a road story, self-discovery, romance, and horror. This is her first novel, and I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised with the outcome.

It takes a lot for me to pick up and read a zombie novel. Not because I hate the genre, there are plenty of classics out there, but because of the vast quantities of terrible ones. It’s a sub-genre so saturated, it has become difficult to burn away all the dross to find the gems inside.

Merry, however, has delivered just such a gem. Max and Clara are separated because Max had to take a trip across Canada just before the virus hits that sends the world into chaos. Both he and Clara end up succumbing to the virus, and reawaken, reborn without memories of their former lives and little motor skills or understanding. But, as they navigate through this strange new world, memories begin to return, even rudimentary speech, and they find their identities as they struggle to find each other from so far away.

You soon come to care for the main characters, and as the journey progresses, we meet several other characters along the way, some wonderful, some evil, and others in between. The fact that Merry has turned a zombie novel into an allegory for racism was something I truly never expected to see, and it ended up really working for me. All of these elements came together to take a genre story that is inarguably tired for a great many people around the world and turn it into a dazzlingly original drama hidden within the confines of a horror novel. This was a brilliant spin on the whole thing, effectively turning zombie fiction on its head, and all I can do is give Ms. Merry a standing ovation and a hearty, “Bravo!”

If you like zombie novels in general, this has all the things you’re looking for. The gore is never over the top, but there are two or three scenes where I shuddered from the descriptions on the page. If you like road stories, there’s a terrific one in here as Max, taking the young newly-turned zombie Jay along with him, makes his way home to his wife. If you like suspense stories involving shady government and military types, you’ve got that, too. And, if you have a soft spot for some heartfelt romance, it’s littered all across the pages of this purely entertaining debut novel.

Any of that sound interesting to you? Trust me, it is. The author writes in a voice all her own, and though I’ve never been to Canada myself, I could see its beauty and variance vividly in my mind’s eye. There’re moments of terror, of sadness, of frustration, of humor, and excitement. It’s not a long read, but it feels complete and I’m glad I decided to invest the time in it, and I look forward to more from this terrific new author.

You won’t regret it either.

I don't know how this book got past me. I absolutely loved 'Zombie Mom'. ( Yes,I have a soft side sometimes).I read the other Dead Aware Novella. Now, let's discuss this one
A virus is killing people. They're now considered zombies after coming back to life. However, some of these zombies can think, speak, and even feel emotion and humanity.
This story revolves around Max and Clare. Spouses separated at the times of their deaths, determined to find each other again.
This is the kind of story that will break your heart, mend it, then break it again. I'm not a fan of being sad, so I try to focus on the joy. This story made me feel something so that means the characters are fleshed out very well.
I don't read too many zombie stories, but this series is a fresh look at the genre. And refreshing.
There was one scene that I wasn't a fan of ( it involved a dog) but I can see why it necessary. Yes, this book is a bit mushier than my typical reads, but it entertained me none the less. So that's great. I'm glad I have #2 locked and loaded on my Kindle so I can continue my journey into the Dead Aware world

I LOVE zombies, but I always felt most of the modern fiction involving zombies has been getting a bit predictable. Enter Dead Aware to save my almost boredom with zombie fiction. Not only are the characters engaging but it is a new view on the virus and the poor souls called "zombies". I don't want to post any spoilers so I'll just say that I usually can guess how something is going to play out with about 95% accuracy and I didn't see how this book played out ahead of time. Usually, I start trying to guess the end a couple of chapters in, but this one kept me so engaged I didn't have the time to wonder about what would happen next. I wanted to read it. So if you want a good fast-paced read that makes you think that involves viral outbreak and zombies this is your book! I'm happily devouring the next one as we speak. I promise you will want more :-)

This was so different from the blood-thirsty brain dead zombie stories I’d read before and watched on TV. These zombies remember their lives before their world came apart. One couple try to find each other across a vast distance. I listened to this as an ARC reviewer and didn’t expect to like it but I’m glad to say I was wrong. I loved it. I hope I get to review any future books/audiobooks written about this group of people. I recommend this audiobook. The narrator, Jane Alvey Harris, was excellent.

It was hard for me to get invested in the story at the start because it starts very slow. The constant head hoping and some repetition didn't help. I almost put it down, but after the first 7 chapters the story really picked up my interest. It's an original take on the zombie virus story and all the characters were compelling. I especially loved how the author puts you in the mind of a zombie. The head hoping persisted through the whole story, but only in minor appearances so it was very easy to ignore and keep reading. If you are like me (frustrated with how stagnant The Walking Dead has become) read this and feel better! This is what I expected of that series.

I’ve wondered what it felt like to be a zombie and now I have an inkling. I DO wonder how a baby could “grow” in an undead body. Where is it getting it’s nutrients and how can Clara live when a baby takes all it needs from its mother. Do zombies heal? They would have to to keep “living.” But if their bodies are dead, then they are slowly decomposing which would make it difficult for Clara to continue as the baby would be taking all she has left.

Not just another Zombie story!

I know that’s what many think, I sometimes do when I see these ghouls pop up as the primary subject matter.
But - this story is bloody fantastic, and is so much more than one may expect!
It builds slowly creating a clear picture of the MCs relationship pre virus which I think really helps the reader bond and feel for the characters when FIRE enters their world and helps create a realistic contrast. This story really breaks the mould when it comes to ‘Zombies.’ A skilfully crafted, well thought out world with characters that really do come to life. This journey is both gut wrenching and heart warming. I had a lump in my throat more than once. I truly fell in love with the characters and I cannot wait to find out what happens next in this series!

I finished this book pretty quickly, so that's a plus. My biggest issue with the story is that overall--in both writing style and execution of concept--the experience was pretty bland. The author can greatly benefit from leaning down their prose and saying more with less. Descriptions of environment and scene setting is pretty bare, with the author taking a very safe approach to their style.

The concept is neat. Two zombies looking for eachother in a cross-country journey is definitely a fun idea. I just with the concept was far more expanded and executed stronger. In a story like this, it would have been amazing to see more of the destruction of humanity particularly with Max's POV through his journey. More chaos, struggle and conflict. We really need to see how the dead would overthrow humanity and this POV would have been neat if he was far more of a peaceful wanderer among the ravenous dead. Warring factions of different groups of the dead vying for power among the rising legions.

Sure, these ideas can be explored in further books and this is book 1, but the book felt long for what it was and the writing needed a bit more fire.

I think the author has potential. They need to hone their craft and deliver stronger visuals and more time taken to build the world. I guess that's my biggest qualm. The world felt pretty dull. Merry has a neat idea, but really needs to run the concept and explore its full potential.
