About the Author

I absolutely loved Dead End Detective, the first book of Amanda Flower's new mystery series, Piper and Porter Mysteries from Hallmark Publishing. The premise, writing and characters are wonderful. In this first installment, Darby's mentor and partner in the Two Girls Detective Agency, Samantha Porter, has been acting a little strange and when Samantha announces she is shutting the agency down (she owns 60% of it) to go to work for Matt Billows, who owns a nearby spa for celebrities' as their security manager, Darby struggles to understand why.

The evening of the day of Darby's confrontation with Samantha concerning closing the agency, Samantha dies in an auto accident. When Darby's former boyfriend, police detective Austin Caster, arrives to notify Darby, it's to tell her it wasn't an accident, but that Samantha was run off the road and went down into a ravine striking a tree. Tire marks at the scene indicate the car involved is Darby's. When it becomes apparent someone was framing Darby, she investigates it herself. Since Darby is Austin's only suspect and when her car is later found and determined to be the car involved, the rush is on for Darby to clear herself.

I really enjoyed this book and I can't wait for the next one in this series. Ms. Flower is a wonderful writer and I think that all cozy lovers will really like this series.

Darby Piper and Samantha Porter are business partners at the Two Girls Detective Agency. But one morning Darby is awoken by a jarring knock on the door. She finds her ex-boyfriend, officer Austin Caster, on her doorstep. He’s there to tell her Sam has been killed in a car accident. But the cops don’t think it’s an accident, and they think Darby had something to do with it.
Darby had expected to inherit Samantha’s half of the agency, but Samantha had recently changed the will to leave it to Tate Porter, her nephew. Tate is a veteran, but he’s not a P.I. And he’s been gone from home for quite some time. Now that they’re partners, Darby and Tate team up to find out what really happened to Samantha, before the cops put her behind bars.
This book was a one-sitting read for me. The characters are perfectly drawn and I felt an instant connection to them. Darby is strong, and she is a great main character. Tate was a great addition to the cast of characters.
The mystery was intriguing, and I kept going back and forth about whodunit. I didn’t see the ending coming, and Amanda Flower did a great job of weaving it all together. There are also two great cats in the book that always add to a story.
I’m happy I got in on the ground floor of this series, and I can’t wait to see what happens next.

Suspects - her nephew Tate who inherits everything as her only living relative - including her share of the agency; her ex-boyfriend who claims he didn’t want to be an ex; the owner of a spa/resort with a bad reputation who was talking to Samantha about closing the agency and working for him; and of course Darby herself who had an argument on the day Samantha died over closing the agency. A good start to a new series! Very enjoyable.

This is the first book in an enjoyable new cozy mystery series by Amanda Flowers. With a truly funny opening scene of Darby Piper trying to coax a reluctant cat down out of a tree, the story moves forward to the tragic death of Darby’s partner in their Two Girls Detective Agency. And as if coping with the death wasn’t bad enough, Darby learns that she is the prime suspect. Can she clear her name, with or without the help of her partner’s nephew, Tate. I liked the development of a relationship between Darby and Tate. The mystery also kept one guessing til the end. And the supporting characters, including Mrs. Berger and her cat, Romy, were great fun.

I have enjoyed several series by Amanda Flower....some more than others as is always the case with authors writing several series. (Heck, I even enjoyed some of Agatha Christie series more than others.) But this new series is off to a smashing beginning and is Amanda writing at the top of her game. The characters are well written and leave you wanting to get to know them better. The story was well developed and, for a change, it really fooled me. I usually can figure out "who done it" half-way through a book but this one had me guessing up to the end. I can't wait for the next book in this series. Hope the wait won't be too long.
