While Yakima Henry was repairing the corral to an old, abandoned shack which he and his partner had planned on keeping a few horses at, he had a visitor, a very beautiful lady. Well, we all know what ended up happening! There was one catch though, she did not want to use any names. This meetup happened quite a few times without the knowledge of anyone else.
Yakima had been working with his partner, Lewis Shackleford, hunting wild horses, breaking them to be sold to the Army. Then one day on their way back to camp, Yakima and Lewis were attacked by outlaws, but out of the blue, an unknown man shows up and saves them. Regrettably, he took a bullet from one he thought was dead. As Yakima searches his possessions to find out who he is, he finds two things, first a very large pouch of gold, and a letter from his wife. Yakima makes up his mind while reading the letter that the rightful owner of the gold is the wife, he figured to make sure she got it. Lewis, however, was of a different mind, and all the time the men had worked together becoming friends flew out the window with the greed of the gold. Unfortunately, the two men did not part friends.
After spending the night at the shack, Yakima rode into town the next day for trail supplies and a new shoe for Wolf, as he headed for the farrier’s he happened to notice the stagecoach leaving town, a woman’s face appeared in the window. He thought it was his mystery woman. Before he could hit the trail he was accosted by the sheriff. Lewis, it seems told the Sheriff that he had raped his daughter and stole his gold. The sheriff took Yakima into custody and threw him into jail.
As the sheriff turned away from locking Yakima’s cell a shot rang out and the Sheriff went down. A big man tromped into the office along with some other rough-looking owlhoots, looked at the sheriff, and wanted to know where the county prosecutor was? After torturing him they finally got the info that he was on the stage that just left town. Seems, the sheriff and prosecutor had hanged the outlaw Betajack’s son, he joined up with another outlaw named Claw Hendricks. It was Claw that looked up afterward and asked Yakima why he was locked up, Yakima told him, he just looked at him and said, “Good on ya, old son!” Then he turned and left, leaving Yakima stunned that he was still alive.
He finagled the keys and beat a hot foot to the blacksmiths. He was the one that told him who the woman on the stage was and that her husband was the one and only county prosecutor. Well, we all know what happens next, he just could not let a beautiful woman get killed, even if she was married to the prosecutor!
Join Yakima as he chases down the stage and tries to keep the outlaws from killing everyone aboard, including the mysterious woman…
What did I like? My boy is back and is he ever in deep doo-doo! It is amazing that he can be so mistreated by the general population but still be so concerned about someone that is in trouble. Not only does his concern cover the beautiful woman but he just can’t ride off when innocents are going to be hurt. The worst thing about that is that even though he proves that he is only there to help, he is still treated like crap!
What will you like? Fast action, more gunplay than a dog with fleas, revenge, emotional, crooked men, owlhoots, innocents, and a beautiful lost woman. The cast of characters is sure a mix-up from everywhere, Peter takes a few from here and there, mixes them together, and joins them up in the fight trying to survive. The storyline is filled with tons of descriptions and details so that you can bring it to life in your mind’s eye, following every step of the desperate battle for their lives. The ending will just blow you away, this was so out of the blue that I did not expect it the way that it happened. Don’t miss this next adventure in Peter Brandvold’s Yakima Henry series, “Dead Man’s Trail” is available today, 8/31/21!
