From New York Times bestselling author Angie Fox
Southern belle Verity Long is back in business—as a ghost hunter. Now all she has to do is visit the town's creepiest mansion and exorcise a family of vengeful spirits. Piece of cake. After all, ghosts love her and need her...that is until she meets the ghosts of Rock Fall mansion. They'll do anything to keep their murderous secrets hidden within the cliff-side fortress—even if that means getting rid of one meddling ghost hunter.
With the entire town skeptical and scrutinizing her every move, Verity struggles to uncover the century-old mystery behind the house. And when she stumbles upon a very fresh, very dead body, she realizes there’s more to it than she ever imagined. With the help of her sexy cop boyfriend, Ellis, and her ghostly gangster sidekick, Frankie, she braves the overgrown gardens, the desolate family cemetery, and the haunted mansion that have been locked away for generations. But can Verity unearth the truth before she's the next one buried on the deadly grounds?

My name is Verity Long. I moved back to my home time with the plans of marrying. That didn't quite work out but I did find myself spending much of my time chasing ghosts and in the arms of my ex-finance's brother Ellis who is also a deputy sheriff with the Sugarland Police Department. Breaking off my engagement found me not only broke but I also had to sell off everything but the house my grandmother had left me just to make ends meet. Now I've just been offered my first paying job. With Frankie's help the task should be profitable and a breeze. I simply have to rid an 1886 estate called Rock Fall of it's ghosts. An easy task. Yeah right. No one really explained to me how evil these ghosts could be nor that there was also a curse attached to the house. After all the whole family had died within days of each other. How dangerous could this curse be?
Deader Homes and Gardens is Book 4 in the Southern Ghost Hunter Mysteries. I've read the three before this one and have had a hard time putting them down. They hold my attention with a combination of humor as well as my mystery and suspense. It is a fun series of books and I'm now looking forward to reading Book 5 - Sweet Tea and Spirits. Each book stands alone but I don't think you'll want to miss reading them in order to keep you up-to-par on who is who.
I really had a great time with this book. I really liked the fact that Verity isn’t hiding her skills any longer. There were some unexpected twists in this book which added to the overall appeal. There was a time or two that I was really worried about Verity. I liked seeing how the relationship between Verity and Ellis is developing and I think that his character adds a lot to the story. Frankie added some lighter moments and I love how his personality offsets Verity’s almost perfectly.
Tavia Gilbert did a fantastic job with the narration of this series once again. I love how she is able to add so much life to each of the characters that play a role in the story. Over the years she has become one of my favorite narrators and I know that her narration added to my enjoyment of this story. I would highly recommend this series to others. It is such a fun cozy series with a perfectly balanced paranormal element. I cannot wait to listen to more of this series.
A southern style ghost mystery.
I love the humor in this paranormal mystery series. Quite a few laughs and even a feel good tear in the resolution. Sparky.
A southern proper woman and a gangster ghost team up to help the town neighbors get rid of unwanted or malicious ghosts while solving a murder. Bless their hearts.
This is the 4th in the series but can be read on its own.
“For most of spring, and now into summer, my newfound ability [ghost hunting] had been the talk of Sugarland, Tennessee, population 17,606. As a result, I’d endured a parade of drop-in visitors curious to see if poor Verity Long was indeed three gallons of crazy in a two-gallon bucket.
At least my neighbors all hailed from the South, where you didn’t drop in without a dish in hand. I’d filled my freezer near to bursting and had been fork-deep in everything from Missy Forester’s Coca-Cola glazed ham to Kimmy Barker’s turnip greens with salt pork.
The homemade bonanza was almost worth the prying questions. But not quite. Truth be told, I’d been hiding out at Ellis’s place a lot. Not even fried green tomatoes warm out of the pan were worth one more random knock on the door that led to an uncomfortable half hour of small talk. Especially if it was with someone I hadn’t seen since the church potluck in fourth grade, and it ended with a “bless your heart.” That was Southern for “yep—you’ve got problems.”
Excerpt From: Fox, Angie. “Deader Homes and Gardens.”
As usual, Verity stumbles into a situation that’s much more than it seems and ghosts aren’t the only danger. Nothing is quite what it seems though and part of the mystery for Verity in Deader Homes and Gardens is figuring out exactly where the true danger is coming from.
Southern Ghost Hunter Mysteries is becoming one of my favorite cozy mysteries with a ghostly twist. Verity is easy to like, the budding romance between her and Ellis is sweet, Lucy is adorable and even Frankie is growing on me. 😉

I love Ms Fox's writing style; I find her books very easy to read and I like the way she weaves all the elements of her stories together - the mystery, the strained relationship between Verity and the rest of the townsfolk of Sugarland, Verity's financial struggles and, of course, the ghosts and their issues.
As a narrated book, again I was impressed with Tavia Gilbert's performance; loving the pace at which she read the story and her tonal adjustments for the dialogue. I would definitely buy books narrated by her in the future.
In short, I really loved this story, although I feel it's more Gothic Horror than Cozy, it has everything that I look for in a 5star story; I laughed, I cried, I was on the edge of my seat (I was even scared at times) - I was gripped!
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys cozy mysteries with a paranormal focus.
