A sexy standalone novel* from New York Times and international bestselling author Elle Kennedy!
She’s about to make a deal with the college bad boy…
Hannah Wells has finally found someone who turns her on. But while she might be confident in every other area of her life, she’s carting around a full set of baggage when it comes to sex and seduction. If she wants to get her crush’s attention, she’ll have to step out of her comfort zone and make him take notice…even if it means tutoring the annoying, childish, cocky captain of the hockey team in exchange for a pretend date.
...and it’s going to be oh so good
All Garrett Graham has ever wanted is to play professional hockey after graduation, but his plummeting GPA is threatening everything he’s worked so hard for. If helping a sarcastic brunette make another guy jealous will help him secure his position on the team, he’s all for it. But when one unexpected kiss leads to the wildest sex of both their lives, it doesn’t take long for Garrett to realize that pretend isn’t going to cut it. Now he just has to convince Hannah that the man she wants looks a lot like him.

Anyway, I digress -- this was an excellent portrayal of two attractive, talented college students, both possessing above-average intelligence and skill in their skills, brought together by Garrett's tenacious persistence in getting her to tutor him in Ethics after he receives an abysmal "F" on his midterm while she managed an "A -." Garrett's ingenuity results in him using her crush on another jock from their class to, whereby he gets tutoring sessions in exchange for letting her be seen with him at football and hockey parties. He manages to parade her on his arm enough where she's not just noticed and acknowledged by everyone on campus, but also succeeds in capturing the attention of her initial crush while Garrett aces his Ethics midterm. The Deal brought together two enigmatic characters who discover that there is major chemistry between them. They discover their personalities mesh, and that sparks go off when they get close, touch, or kiss. They discover too, that they have no desire to give each other up, and thus, they become the talk of the campus, and each other's support system.
It's lovely how Garrett leans on Hannah, and vice versa, and how they sweetly support and ground each other with love, respect and the security in knowing they're absolutely safe with each other.
Major triggers include:
I really liked this book. I enjoyed Hannah and Garrett as characters they had really strong character voices and I could picture them easily in my head. Hannah is a rape victim who has not really connected with anybody in a sexual way which is incredibly common. It’s nice to see it addressed in a story but not put down on. I even liked that her previous boyfriend wasn’t a complete dick it just didn’t work. Which is sort of spoiler he but also kind of not it’s a refreshing change that I love seeing.
Garrett starts off as a bit of a pushy Alpha, used to getting his own way always sleeping around, but even there his sleeping around wasn’t presented in a negative way it’s simply is who he was. It was a very sex positive book that didn’t shame people who had sex and didn’t show people who didn’t have sex both were considered valid which is honestly the truth. And as the story progresses Garrett started becoming deeper and deeper of a character his drive to succeed at hockey was shown to be a remnant of his past abused by his father which again spoiler but also really an important aspect of his life and something that if you are a survivor of child abuse or emotional abuse you should know going in in case that is a triggering thing.
The sex was well written and I was really pleasantly surprised to see how much consent was going on and how much checking in was going on and that the guy was saying no and setting boundaries and that both the guy in the girl respect each other‘s boundaries. That matters.
Frankly I thoroughly enjoyed this book so I’m really happy to give it five stars.
The Deal is the first book in the Off-Campus New Adult contemporary romance series.
The book takes place at college and alternates chapters between Hannah and Garrett.
Hannah is a gifted music major who has a crush on a boy in her Ethics class. Garrett is the cocky captain of the hockey team. When playing hockey is in jeopardy because of a failed test Garrett desperately needs a tutor.
The book is much lighter and funnier than I thought that it would be. Even though much of the story is predictable NA I really enjoyed the tone of the book. Both Hannah and Garrett had undergone traumatic events in their lives. But the book, especially in Hannah's case did not dwell so much on these issues. I liked that even though Hannah had been through something horrible in her past, she had mostly dealt with it before the book started.
I really enjoyed everything about Garrett playing hockey. And I really enjoyed everything about Hannah and her singing, especially everything to do with the music showcase.
This book was a quick, enjoyable read.
There was only one part of the story that wasn't resolved enough for me. It had to do with Hannah's parents situation. I wanted more with Hannah's parents.
The Deal is a sports-themed college New Adult romance. It is funny and charming and if you enjoy NA then you must read this book.
I'm torn on this one. Garrett's chemistry with Hannah was amazing, and their interactions were addictive, but I did find myself cringing throughout. Garrett would often talk about how much sex, including oral, he has had. He and his friends often had sex with "puck bunnies"--and were crude about it. There were also a couple detailed sexual encounters featuring the hero (but no cheating.) A brief mention of casual hookups would have been fine or an implied sex scene before H&h were together, but I just don't need details of the hero with other people in a romance novel. I still give it 3.5 stars because it was well written, their interactions really were amazing and Garrett does have many redeeming qualities. I don't think I'll read another book by this author though, because I just don't enjoy books with the constant hookups and crude talk about them and encounters outside the H&h, even if there's no cheating.

A thoroughly enjoyable read. I’ll be honest, it’s not that much different than other books of its genre, but what sets it apart is the writing; it’s beautifully written and the characters are wonderfully flawed, emotionally scarred and yet willing to change and grow. Garrett was a great character who really made me laugh. I don’t think this book would have been the same if his character had been altered in any way. As for Hannah, she’s got an inner strength that’s truly inspiring. I love that in helping Garrett, they both begin to learn from one another. Each taking steps into worlds they didn’t ever see themselves venturing before. It’s a really sweet romance in which the main couple are both a little broken. I like that the story didn’t feel rushed and all their issues are resolved by the end. The only vaguely negative thing I can say about the book is that I would have liked the epilogue to go a little further into the future to see how things worked out in the long run, not only for Garrett but for Hannah’s parents too. Aside from that slight disappointment, (which is really only my own personal desire to see more), I’m really looking forward to continuing with the rest of the series so that I can catch up with Garrett and his roommates.
Trigger warning: Physical and sexual abuse play a part of some of the characters back stories and are discussed throughout the novel.
But it was great, instead!
First thing is that Garret Graham is my dream bad boy from now on! He's handsome, he's playing hockey, he's not dumb, he's a freaking sweetheart if it comes to his loved ones and he's HOT!
Obviously I'd accept him to my bed without doubt!
Hannah is a really complex character, I don't know much about rape victims and their coping but this book provided a little insight! I'd gladly read more about it but I learned so much as it was!
The other tragic issue mentioned in this book is domestic violence and in my opinion it was perfectly described! The effect it has on a family and on the victim's life, how it has an influence on every part of their life, it's just something everyone should know more about!
The love story is cute! I love the hate/prejudice to love realtionships and I enjoyed every minute of seeing the music student and the star athlete falling for each other! I had this High School Musical in collage feeling at the beginning and it was a little nostalgic and fun to read it like this!
The characters and the conversations were funny and amusing! The bickering, the shamelss flirting, student life and the growing up feels make this book a really enjoyable read!
Also, the smut was great!
I recommend this book to the lovers of NA romance, and to everyone who wants to read a not so light, funny romance with some smut and also a message!
Garrett Graham is the hockey team captain who wants to go pro. However, he’s failing in one subject and needs a tutor. Hannah is one of the few people managing to pass the class and he is relentless in trying to persuade her to tutor him.
Hannah is not interesting in tutoring who she believes is just another privileged, dumb, (who cares if he’s gorgeous?) jock, but in the end she makes a deal. She agrees to tutor him in return for a fake date to get her crush’s attention. Obviously, this will all work out fine until they start to like each other a bit too much, of course, and end up doing more than a bit of tutoring.
I like Hannah, she’s experienced so much trauma (she was drugged and raped in high school) but she’s worked through it, even though she’s still battling some lingering fears. But she’s not a victim, she’s trying to get on with her life and I really respect her for it. She just has a confidence problem with this one crush.
Garret is interesting too, he’s not just the dumb jock who swans through college on his reputation, or just the popular sports hero who sleeps around. He’s clever and he works hard to keep his place on the team both on and off the ice. That doesn’t mean he’s not a player though, but he appears to have a conscience about it and doesn’t lead girls on. He’s decent and he’s the first to admit that the girls that sleep with him do so for the bragging rights, not because they actually care about him personally.
Oh, they are so cute together. The reader is a witness to their journey: the reluctant acceptance of their deal, the morph into friendship, the banter, the attraction and the stronger feelings that grow between them, then the realisation that they’re much more than friends fooling around. They are so good together, so very understanding and supportive of each other, and turned me into a yummy mush of awww.
Here’s a snippet:
‘“Baby, I could watch you watching paint dry, and I still wouldn’t be bored.”
Garrett Graham, my own personal sweet-talker.’
This book gives the full feels and it’s not disrupted by jerky prose or grammatical errors. It flows so nicely and is easy to read. The sex scenes are also the perfect combo of heat and emotions. I only had one little niggle which was a little disappointment at the overused plot device of blackmail by the narcissistic parent, which I felt Hannah succumbed to far too easily.
All that’s left to say is I love this book: I love the characters, I love the plot, I love the yummy, cosy feels I got throughout.
Side note, the synopsis doesn't do a lick of justice for this book and could have been better.
My friend is going to Rome in a few days and she asked me what book she could read on her flight, "The Deal" fell from my mouth without thought.
I love Hannah, she is strong and witty, and her character is amazing. She has had a rough time and her progression through this is amazing. The characters are all brilliant, the two leads both have issues that they have to get through and often do it with the help of each other. The secondary characters were all brilliant too.
I have read one romance since this book and was a little annoyed at it. All the non-romance aspects of the story were just ignored and not concluded, whereas The Deal I didn't have any of that. The story progresses at a good pace and nothing is left unanswered.
I really enjoyed this book and it seems most people who read the book love it too, so I would definitely recommend this book.
Elle Kennedy did amazing.
Except he didn't expect to start to enjoy her company or have feelings for her. So when she asks for his help to fix her, he can't refuse her.
This is a story of two broken souls who are both survivors. Hannah was raped at 15 and Garrett has been physically abused by his father since he was 12.
Both manage to face the trauma of their past, find love and a future.
This is a great read, a sensitive story with laugh out loud moments. If it can make me not mind reading a book full of hockey references, then its definitely worth continuing with series. Enjoy peeps 😉
