Could have been great… but was awful instead.

Nothing but far left liberal propaganda starting from the first few minutes! Starts with a story of a gay high school teenager who “hooks up with a male model from Brazil” at his summer camp. It then proceeds to show several scenes inside a high school where the walls are literally plastered with gay pride posters, Black Lives Matter posters, environmental activist posters, racial equity, and LGBTQ+ advertisements! If I wanted to see a bunch of left wing liberal propaganda I’d have just watched the news on mainstream media! This could have been an amazing movie with a very special message that I could’ve shared with my teenage daughter. Instead, we were both disgusted with the blatant attempt to push their agenda and we turned it off after 30 minutes! Don’t waste your time or money with this garbage.

Good Movie, Great Music, You should watch it

The music is amazing of course but I was disappointed that they cut out 2 of the light-hearted songs from the musical and added another sad song. There are only 3 light-hearted songs to begin with. The new song is good but unnecessary.

It’s not a big deal that Ben Platt isn’t a teenager in real life. Neither is Kaitlyn Dever. The problem is they had him display child-like mannerisms. He’s supposed to be senior but he has the mannerisms of a Junior High student.

That said, if you like musicals and are fans of the songwriters then you will like this. It’s a good movie with fewer minor issues than most these days.

The 1-star reviews are trolls. Amazon really needs to add a “troll” button.

Great Musical and Entertaining movie

This is my first viewing of this story at all and I am very pleased with what I watched.

It's messages about mental health are prominent and we should be able to speak up and support each other about how we are feeling down at times. The conflict that the main character goes through with his lies gets you grinding your teeth or cringing but not in a bad way and that's because you actually care for the characters who have been presented to you. The acting was good for what they were doing and there was never a moment when I felt like I was ripped out of the story. So its a 5/5 for me!

And to all the reviews who are complaining about the actors age playing a high school student, yes. He is 28 playing a teenager, but so are hundreds of other actors who are high schoolers in movies like Scream, Dazed and Confused, Can't Hardly Wait, American Pie, etc. It's called suspension of disbelief. We watch movies to escape reality and enjoy a work of fiction (sometimes non-fiction) for a few hours, not to nitpick the age of actors.

This film is incredible. It captured my attention from the very first frame. The pace, the acting, the cinematography, the lighting, the editing - every single aspect of this film is perfect. I do not understand why people don't like it. The play was already amazing and this movie made the story even better. I laughed, I cried, I shed a lot of tears. The end of the movie left me with a big emotional smile on my face.
Please watch this movie. You won't regret it.

Good. Not Great.

After reading reviews I was prepared for a disaster, but I generally liked the movie.

I loved the Broadway production with Ben Platt, but as usual the stage version doesn't always translate well to the big screen. Platt is fantastic but, as others have said, a little old for the role. That being said, I do think the movie has merit and I thought it got better as it progressed.

The opening number had me cringing and I wish they had done something less "reality based" and mimicked the stage production artistically. But I thought as the story unfolded they did a better job with the interplay of song and dialogue.

Perfect Message at the Perfect Time

Amazing performances and message. In a time where more people than who are willing to admit struggle with mental and emotional distress, this film reminds everyone we are not alone and strips the taboo of discussing feelings and mental illness away.

I've been obsessed with this Broadway for a while now and I'm so happy that I got to see some kind of theatrical version of it. The message is so relevant to what both young people and adults alike are dealing with nowadays, especially with the overwhelming influence of social media. I highly recommend taking the time to watch it.
