About the Author

Robert Goldsborough (b. 1937) is an American author best known for continuing Rex Stout’s famous Nero Wolfe series. Born in Chicago, he attended Northwestern University and upon graduation went to work for the Associated Press, beginning a lifelong career in journalism that would include long periods at the Chicago Tribune and Advertising Age.
While at the Tribune, Goldsborough began writing mysteries in the voice of Rex Stout, the creator of iconic sleuths Nero Wolfe and Archie Goodwin. Goldsborough’s first novel starring Wolfe, Murder in E Minor (1986), was met with acclaim from both critics and devoted fans, winning a Nero Award from the Wolfe Pack. Nine more Wolfe mysteries followed, including Death on Deadline (1987) and Fade to Black (1990). The Battered Badge (2018) is his most recent novel.

ENJOYABLE FOR THIS LONG-TIME NERO WOLFE FAN

I have been a fan of the Nero Wolfe books since I first came across the collection TRIPLE ZECK back in 1980. I've read all of Rex Stout's books ... even his non-Nero mysteries ... and even his non-mysteries. I've read all of Robert Goldsborough's Nero Wolfe books. With that background, I ALMOST didn't buy this book due to the unusually high negative reviews for this title - unusual for a Robert Goldsborough book. But I had just re-read Robert's first 13 Nero Wolfe books, so I decided to buy the book anyway. OK ... the book has some faults ... but just about every Nero Wolfe book I've read - Rex Stout or Robert Goldsborough - has had some faults. THE BOTTOM LINE FOR ME is that I enjoyed reading this new book. It was new Nero Wolfe that I had not previously read. Many readers have the ability to pick to pieces just about any book ever published, but I feel the book is much better than some of the disaster reviews it has received. SO, IF YOU ARE HESITATING TO BUY THIS BOOK - LIKE I WAS - AND YOU LOVE THE NERO WOLFE SERIES, THEN TAKE A CHANCE AND BUY THE BOOK. I'M GLAD I DID.

This time I didn't have a clue who did it. When the answer was reveal and how, it was a very tiny clue. Still enjoy it. Although I didn't like the foreshadowing of the ending. I just don't care for this style. You know when the character thinks if only I knew what was coming comments. It throws me off from the tale. It was just satisfactory.

Seems in his later books Goldsborough follows the pattern of every suspect being questioned in the same manner and the suspects answering the same questions with the same answers. Very little from the perspective of an intricate mystery plot. The one plus of the book it the level of interaction between Archie Goodwin and Lily Rowan.

Reading a Robert Goldsborough is like a visit with a close friend. I've read them all and had the extreme honor of meeting the auther twice. At both times the book store that was hosting the event was packed solid. He has a lot of fans who really appreciate his work. I take my time reading his books. This way I savor them to an extreme. I read some of the reviews regarding different readers opinions. Some expressed their displeasure and one said don't waste your money. Well I did and it was money well spent. Everyone one is entitled to their own thought sand now I have to express mine. Mr. Goldborough please continue to write. I can't get enough of Nero and Archie.

I have enjoyed all the Nero Wolfe stories written by Robert Goldsborough and this one was no exception. I should point out, however, that I stumbled in one place: in Chapter 13, Nadia Wordell and Lewis Hewitt visit Nero Wolfe at 2:30 pm, but in Chapter 14 we are told that the visit took place in the morning, and that after lunch (say, around 2:30?) Nero and Archie were actually discussing that visit. But apart from that, the story is very well written.

I’ve read many dozens of Rex Stout’s Nero Wolfe novels. This didn’t sound like a Nero Wolfe book to me, and neither Wolfe nor Archie came across as true as in the original works. There was an awful lot of filler and most of the male suspects blended in my mind so I couldn’t tell one from another. Despite my dislike of this novel, I’m going to give Goldsborough another chance, hoping that it was just this story and not all in his series that updates the timeframe.
