The Death Panel: Murder, Mayhem, and Madness features 13 stories from authors of crime, suspense, and horror. Sadistic serial killers, German war criminals, cops and zombies, the mob and monsters, detectives and were-creatures, all rolled up into one roller coaster ride of an anthology. Ultra violent, hardboiled, with an unhealthy dose of the macabre, The Death Panel is a no-holds-barred, in-your-face hard ride to hell. EDITORIAL REVIEWS HORROR WORLD "...if you’re looking for something a little different to read in your horror fiction, a book with stories that are edgy and cool as all hell, then pick up The Death Panel, and then be prepared to be blown away by some of the best genre short story fiction written in the last few years. Yes, this book is that good." BOOKGASM "With sharp writing and a crisp design to match, the anthology makes a strong case for 2009's best. About the authors
Erik Williams is the author of DEMON, GUARDIAN, and BIGFOOT CRANK STOMP. Besides being a prolific writer of dark fiction, he's also an active freelance writer in the realm of non-fiction. Oh, and he's a former Naval officer and defense contractor (but he's not allowed to talk about it, nor does he really want to).
Tim Curran lives in Michigan and is the author of the novels Skin Medicine, Hive, Dead Sea, and Skull Moon. Upcoming projects include the novels Resurrection, The Devil Next Door, and Hive 2, as well as The Corpse King, a novella from Cemetery Dance, and Four Rode Out, a collection of four weird-western novellas by Curran, Tim Lebbon, Brian Keene, and Steve Vernon. His short stories have appeared in such magazines as City Slab, Flesh&Blood, Book of Dark Wisdom, and Inhuman, as well as anthologies such as Flesh Feast, Shivers IV, High Seas Cthulhu, and, Vile Things. David James Keaton's work has appeared in over 100 publications, including Grift, Needle, Thuglit, PANK, and Noir at the Bar II. His contribution to Plots With Guns #10 was named a Notable Story of 2010 by storySouth's Million Writers Award, and his (totally foolproof) casino scam in Crime Factory #8 won the 2012 Spinetingler Award for the Best Short Story on the Web. His first collection, FISH BITES COP! Stories to Bash Authorities (Comet Press), was named the 2013 Short Story Collection of the Year by This Is Horror and was a finalist for the Killer Nashville Silver Falchion Award. His second collection of short fiction, STEALING PROPELLER HATS FROM THE DEAD (Perpetual Motion Machine), received a Starred Review from Publishers Weekly, who said, "Decay, both existential and physical, has never looked so good." His first novel, THE LAST PROJECTOR (Broken River Books), was called "A loopy, appealing mix of popular culture and thoroughly crazy people" by Kirkus Reviews, and his second novel, the western PIG IRON (Burnt Bridge/Blastgun), has been optioned for film. He has also been nominated for the Pushcart Prize, and was the Editor-in-Chief and co-founder of Flywheel Magazine. He is the co-editor of HARD SENTENCES: Crime Fiction Inspired by Alcatraz, and his third collection and latest book, OUR POOL PARTY BUS FOREVER DAYS (Comet Press), will be released this October. These days, he's tinkering with several screenplays, including a prison movie, a thriller, and a western, also adapting them into novels. He realizes this method is probably backwards. His books are available wherever insanity is sold. He can be contacted at davidjameskeaton[at]gmail[dot]com.
Randy Chandler is the author of the novels STOLEN ROADS, DIME DETECTIVE and DAEMON OF THE DARK WOOD, and of two previously published novels BAD JUJU and HELLz BELLz (all now available on Kindle). He also co-authored DUET FOR THE DEVIL with t. Winter-Damon (God rest his soul). Randy's collection of short stories is DEVILS, DEATH & DARK WONDERS. His first ever fantasy novel is ANGEL STEEL. He co-edits YEAR'S BEST HARDCORE HORROR with Cheryl Mullenax for Comet Press.
Randy has been an indie magazine editor/publisher, a freelance book reviewer, a mental health worker, a gas-pump jockey, an ambulance attendant, a soldier in Vietnam, and a funeral home flunky. He often haunts fields of carnage where angels and devils do battle.
Brandon Ford (b. 1981 - ) is an American author of horror and suspense fiction. His works include OPEN WOUNDS, THE FINAL GIRL, PAY PHONE, THE FACILITY, DECAYED ETCHINGS, and COFFEE AT MIDNIGHT. He has also contributed to more than a dozen genre anthologies. He currently resides in Philadelphia.
Fred Venturini has eleven scars from eleven separate incidents, the most interesting of which is the time he was set on fire. For the others, just ask. His short fiction has been featured in the Booked. Anthology, Noir at the Bar 2, and Chuck Palahniuk's BURNT TONGUES anthology. He is the acclaimed author of THE HEART DOES NOT GROW BACK and THE ESCAPE OF LIGHT (Turner, 2019). On the basketball court, he is a three-point specialist and defensive liability. He lives in Southern Illinois with his wife and daughter.

David's short fiction has appeared in over a hundred magazines and anthologies, including Clarkesworld, Lightspeed, Nightmare, and Beneath Ceaseless Skies, and fourteen of his horror and dark fantasy stories were brought together in the collection The Sign in the Moonlight and Other Stories.

The Death Panel is a fun fast paced read with wonderful stories throughout. Just like with Vile Things, not all of the stories are gems, but all of them were fun to read and enjoyable. Many of the same authors from Vile Things have entries here and will have entries in Comet Press's forthcoming Sick Things, a collection of creature shorts, which just shows Comet Press's dedication to publishing new talent and maintaining a stable of amazing authors. Recommended.
This was a decent short story collection which featured a good mix of veterans and unknown authors. The standouts for me were Lipstick Swastika by Randy Chandler and The Mouth by John Everson. These two stories were a good mix of erotica and horror.
Blood Sacrifices & the Catatonic Kid by Tom Piccirilli
The Neighbor by Brandon Ford
Fly by Night by Tim Curran (This author almost always captures my attention!)
Rindelstein's Monsters by David Tallerman
Backseat by Eric Williams
Seven memorable stories out of thirteen isn't bad. As a whole this collection didn't knock my socks off, but the stories that were good stood out as VERY good.
Other advantages:
- Plenty of genres. Every story is unique, there you can find and full brutal splatterpunk, and practically "bloodless" suspense story.
- High level of writer's craft. I dare to say that it's like a "Hall of Fame" for dark fiction authors. Tom Piccirilli, Randy Chandler, Tim Curran, John Everson...
You won't be disappointed by the Death Panel, I promise.
Several of them deserve a place in any collection of noir shorts worth its salt, however.
Like most anthologies, "Death Panel" has its strengths and weaknesses. Among the gems I'd place Tom Piccirilli's "Blood Sacrifices and the Catonic Kid" near the top - a clever and ironic tale of a wise old con out for revenge. Randy Chandler, who writes noir like he's related to crime classicist Raymond, get the collection of to a strong start with "Lipstick Swastika", the story of a hotel detective and loathsome female Nazi death camp guard on the lam. And there's "Detail" by Fred Venturini, where CSI meets "Car And Driver." Simon Wood's "Parental Guidance" adds some brutally new dimensions to tough love. While Brandon Ford's "The Neighbor" majors in stomach-turning perversion, yet has that same gruesome magnetism that draws spectators to a plane crash.
I was less than enamored with "What Makes and Angel Cry". Seems author Kelly Hudson may have tried to pick up on a theme perfected by Charlie Huston's vampire Joe Pitt series, but failed to measure up to Huston's hip and irreverent delivery. "Rindelstein's Monsters", by David Tallerman, was built around an intriguing "post Rapture" existence, but unfortunately fell short of what I was hoping would develop into a unique approach to the overdone apocalypse stories. Others, like John Everson's "The Mouth", while undeniably original, pretty much pegged the nausea needle, and Zach Sherwood's "Board up the House" was just a bit oblique and ambiguous for my tastes.
So while definitely not for the squeamish, this is a well-edited collection of crime horror; thirteen fast-paced reads that waste little time in the niceties of prose or setting that might upstage the terror and shock of the main event. In short, the Comet Press has compiled an edgy and gruesome set of tales to incite pitchfork-wielding mobs - a perversely entertaining form of guilty pleasure guaranteed to satisfy that "Tales from the Crypt" part of your psyche.

Whether it is a hotel detective having a run in with a wanted female Nazi war criminal, to angels and demons or sick serial killers, this book is not for those just looking for nice comfortable stories. Sexy and violent, with some great black humour in places this is well worth reading. Some of the authors you have undoubtedly heard of before, but there are some you probably haven't.
If you like good sexy, violent pulp reads, then this book should be just the thing you crave.
