I was given an extremely beat up copy for this book a few years ago and put off reading it since I'm not really a Western fiction fan. A few months later I got stuck without another book to read, so I decided to give it a try. I was hooked on the story almost immediately and couldn't fathom reading anything else until I finished the book. I then had to track down copies of the sequels to find out the rest of the story!

Incredibly redundant and juvenile. The author must be stuck at the law and order stage of moral development..I' read to the end only because the daughter of one of my grad students recommended it (I can see why knowing the girl and her infatuation with horses and frontier justice.) and the kid needs to be encouraged to read. . .read anything.

5.0 out of 5 stars Vengeance Trail
Reviewed in the United States on March 31, 2020
It was the late author Bill Crider, with his 'Outrage at Blanco' novel that made me love revenge stories so much and in away revenge stories for me will always be a tribute to him.

Basically a re-read, plucked out of my library, have always liked Ralph Compton's writing, his Danny Duggin series probably is my favorite, he has a tough as nails teenage girl who disguises herself as a boy, and never misses a beat with 'Death Rides a Chesnut Mare'. What makes this work is that Compton doesn't mix up the narrative with her, it's a realistic, believable and best of all he puts the reader right their riding along with Daniel Strange on the vengeance trail.

It starts in St. Joseph, Missouri, most set in Indian Territory, Kansas, Texas and along the border with Mexico. It's after the Civil War, Texas cattle can be had for $3.00 ahead and that exactly what gunsmith Daniel Strange sets out to do. His wife doesn't want him to do it, even has bad feeling about and he's not to be dissuaded from doing it.

He sells his gunsmith shop, to come up with money to purchase a herd. To get to Texas he crosses Indian Territory, by himself, he ultimately runs into an Outlaw gang, he kills 2 of them and the other 10 end up hanging him. Deputy U.S. Marshall Buck Jordan finds his body, buries it and gets word to his family of his death. To know the rest, you gotta read, 'Death Rides a Chestnut Mare'.

Little did the late Ralph Compton know back in 1999, that he would write a perfect novel for readers, especially Western fans to escape into the pages to ride along with Daniel Strange on the vengeance trail, while self isolating themselves and free their minds of worrying about Covid 19 for a few hours.

Wish everyone the best in these trying times, stay healthy, take serious, catch up some TBR and remember sometimes the best reads are ones you already read.

Great story about a gal looking to avenge her father's death. I also liked the footnotes about characters from the Old West like Wesley Hardin and King Fisher.

2.0 out of 5 stars And the Breasts Have the Floor
Reviewed in the United States on September 18, 2005
In recent years, Walmart has steadily improved the selection of bad western titles offered on its shelves. Death Rides a Chestnut Mare is definetely the silliest of the Westerns on that shelf. The plot - a 17 yearold girl well endowed with female gifts running around with a binder (oooh, she hates that binder) and a gun, killing about twenty odd men in six months while covering some five thousand miles of travel. For a while, I think Compton flirts with some serious kinky sex - during the first killing she's not wearing pants, having dropped skirt to blind the guy (yep, woman's lib for you), a gratuitious nude scene of Danielle cleaning her gun, and one scene of a naked boy prancing around for Danielle dressed as a man. So, juvenile sexuality, silly plot, unrealistic hero. I give two stars, one for each large, young, nubile breast.

This is a simple minded teenage romance novel that happens to be set in the west. Comparison to Louis L'Amour, as the cover suggests, is ridiculous.

Daniel Strange meets his [end] while riding his chestnut mare on the way to Texas hoping to buy some cattle. He is the best gunsmith in Missouri but his lifeless body is left at the end of a rope, robbing his family of a good husband and father.
... The first of a trilogy, all of them good.

2.0 out of 5 stars just a pop western

The premise was good - female gunfighter goes after father's killers - but you'll have to accept the action with huge bag of salt. Come on, 17 year old female greenhorn gunfighter killing, by my count, 27 men in about 6 months? Why, the writer himself says John Wesley Hardin killed 31 men all his life! A gunfighter who isn't afraid, almost never misses is almost always not very exciting, probably because you know he/she is going to win all the battles. Give me a more realistic hero anytime.

I loved this book!! There are 4 books in all, and this one is the best, though they are all great. A female as the lead hero is a refreshing addition to western literature. Some may find it unbelievable, but I thought it was awesome!! I highly recommend it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Can't Wait to get the sequel
Reviewed in the United States on June 15, 2000
I found this book very interesting and informative as I am from North Texas and know most of the cities that were mentioned in the book. I also liked the way Mr. Compton put the history footnotes at the bottom of the pages. I can't wait to read the sequel and find out what happens to Danielle. I share most of my books with my Mom and I think she will greatly enjoy this one as well.

This book is a fine work by Compton. I didn't know when I bought it that is was one of two, had I known I would have bought both.Rarely has there been a book that will draw the reader into it as this one and you will not regret the day you saw the title that will become one of the best books you've ever read.

I've read all of Ralph Comptons books. It is unfortunate that Mr. Compton passed away this past year. If you enjoy reading action westerns purhase the entire series of Compton books. Last publication, "The Shadow of a Noose" is very good also. Thanks to Mr. Ralph Cotton, the Compton legacy lives on.
