Henry and Jason led normal lives in Seattle before they were abducted to another world. Their kidnapper, the vain, self-styled god Dolos, refuses to send them back unless they can accomplish an impossible task. Oddly, Dolos doesn't seem to care if they succeed or not.
Luckily, Henry and Jason studied Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA) on Earth. Unfortunately, a Japanese American EMT and a geeky IT programmer don't have many other useful skills on a sword-and-sorcery world like Ludus.
Stranded in the middle of nowhere on an alien world, the friends have no real direction and only a few possessions including magic-granting orbs from an apathetic god. Undaunted, the two begin their insane adventure to return home...but basic survival and eventually paying rent will have to take priority.

This story has everything I've been craving lately;
--Characters with REAL depth (these are people with real issues and motivations and feelings!)
--Not afraid to get dark (The evil characters are twisted and ruthless with as much depth as the heroes)
--An amazing world willed with magic, civilization, wilderness, and it all feels real! (Racism, Stereotypes, and all the diplomatic faux pas really add up to make the world feel real)
--Magic! With levels! (Yay for level ups! No named abilities, but it's not that crunchy a LitRPG)
--Damn creative fights and well laid out battles!
--Relationships! (Quite real too with the pig-headedness and cluelessness we all feel sometimes with our loved ones)
The only thing you won't find is more....intimate scenes. Nothing wrong with that (that's what I have Prax Venter's Enthralled series for, hehe).
It's unfortunate, but this author has fallen in to the trap of feminist story telling tropes via character archetypes.
These archetypes can be seen throughout modern media:
Male characters have 3 archetypes: Evil, Idiot, or Loser.
Female characters have 3 archetypes: Mary Sue, Downtrodden Victim, Triumphant Victim
Characters can carry a single archetype or can be a combination, but any persistent character will be made up of these archetypes, because the feminist narrative does not allow for anything else. In this series the MCs fall under the idiot archetype. (Something the author wants to ensure the reader understands by quite literally putting it in the story every dozen pages or so.)
I can only stomach male characters being treated like morons barely capable of feeding themselves without female guidance for so long.
Without naming any spoilers, I will gently shake my fist at Blaise for making me care about all the characters in his awesome story and not yet having book 2 finished for me to read!
If you haven't picked up this book yet, then stop wasting time and buy it! You won't regret it!
In short its almost a bit to much of a fantasy book for me but I enjoyed the characters and the world that was built so much that I enjoyed the story despite of my misgivings.
Welcome to Ludus starts well, and the ride just keeps getting better. The storyline is excellent. Each chapter is well presented and nicely detailed. The majority of the characters in this story are alien, with just a few (so far) being from Earth. Plots and subplots develop at a good pace. And, by the end of Book 1, I was well and truly hooked.
Buy the book and enjoy some wonderful, frequently gory adventures. Once I finish this review/opinion piece, I will dive into the 2nd DLLC book. Fini...

The action isn't well written, and often contains epic internal monologues that some how happen in-between heart beats.
Also Where's the litrpg stats?
In summary. Its a soppy, white Knight saving the day book. I wouldn't be surprised if they get a unicorn that deficates rainbows and can magically make people happy with kisses and love heart emojis. Cliché dribble start to finish.

The book is very well executed and it is clear the amount of consideration that has gone into the world-building before the events in the book take place. The author avoids the pitfalls common to fantasy, SF and LitRPG of allowing things to happen "because I said so" and instead has definite explanations for magic, technology (and the lack of some of it) and development which are expanded more as the series progresses.
The main characters and the supporting characters that they meet are well written and have distinct personalities and, importantly, aren't invulnerable to making mistakes (sometimes repeatedly). Progression in the classical sense is well paced and allows time to get to know the characters whilst in the LitRPG sense it is equally well paced with characters becoming powerful but not hideously overpowered too quickly. Dialogue and character interaction is good and has a subtlety which helps to build events up for later in the series.
If you are a fan of LitRPG or Fantasy writing I would certainly advocate downloading a sample and giving it a go.
