About Dennis Jones
Born in Mountain Grove, a small rural town in the Missouri Ozarks, Dennis is the fourth of six children. He logged a ton of pew time at the local Baptist Church where he honed his artistic abilities by drawing on church bulletins during Sunday morning sermons.
After graduating from high school, he attended Southwest Missouri State University and studied art. During the college years, he spent his summers working in amusement parks (Opryland & Silver Dollar City) drawing caricatures. Dennis graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree and stumbled blindly into a career as a freelance illustrator.
After spending the 90s in Texas, Dennis and family moved to Northeastern Indiana where his wife Karen is a professor at Huntington University. His two grown sons now live and work in the Oklahoma City area.
For fun Dennis plays in a recreational ice hockey league where he pretends to be Wayne Gretzky, but plays more like Wayne Gretkowski, the ninety year old store greeter at the local Wal-Mart. He also occasionally plays bass and guitar in the band at his church where he continues to insist that a pyrotechnics show and hydraulic stage for the band would really add a lot to the Sunday morning worship services.

Blog postHere’s something fun… back in 2014 I posted a little color sketch of William Wallace. Sergio Clemente from Spain just did a 3-d render of it and I think he did an excellent job!

Blog postHere’s something I worked on last summer that was a lot of fun. It’s the first in a series of old west stories, THE HANGING JUDGE. When we were initially talking about the project, I suggested that the books should look like worn out old paperbacks that a cowboy might have pulled out of his saddlebag and that the interior pages should be similarly antique looking. The editors thought that was a pretty good idea and we were off and running. What a great bunch of people to work for!

Blog postI was a big fan of the old comic strip Calvin and Hobbes. I really liked the way Calvin’s world revolved around his imaginary tiger friend Hobbes.
I decided it was time for me to make my own imaginary tiger friend, so I went to the fabric store, grabbed black, orange and white fleece, and asked for a half yard of each. The girl looked at my selection of materials and said, “making something for halloween?” and I said “uhm… maybe.” Then I took my cut fabric to the register to pa3 weeks ago Read more -
Blog postOne of the very first storybook jobs I ever got was a two book series about a little boy called Theodore Bump. Several decades later the author contacted me and asked if I would be interested in doing a third Theodore Bump book… absolutely! I just got an advance copy of the finished book.

Blog postI’ve been known to play a game or two on my phone when no one is looking. I’ve also been known to draw the characters in the games that I am playing on my phone when no one is looking. This is Gillie The Cook, a former pirate who is currently the leader of the Dewport Guard.
I did this on an iPad Pro using an Apple Pencil and Procreate.

The goal in keeping a sketchbook is not to create a finished work of art on every page... the goal is to put your ideas down on paper so you won’t forget them... at least, that’s the way I see it. These are my sketchbooks from the past several years and the pages within give a glimpse of what was on my mind during those points in time. Dennis Jones
