"Bryan Smith is one of the most reliable and consistently entertaining writers working in the horror and suspense genres."--Ray Garton, author of Live Girls
Four years ago, Jessica Sloan drove out to a backwoods town to execute the rapist stashed in the trunk of her car. She barely made it out of Hopkins Bend alive and emerged changed forever by the ordeal. Now she’s freshly discharged from the military and on the run after being framed for a murder she didn't commit. Running out of options—and with an assassin hot on her trail—she heads again for Hopkins Bend, now a deserted ghost town. But things are not as they seem in Hopkins Bend and Jessica soon finds herself plunged into another nightmare of depravity and madness.
DEPRAVED 2 is the sequel to the hit novel DEPRAVED, hailed by acclaimed author Brian Keene as one of the 10 best books of 2009.
"I look forward to spending a weekend with a new Bryan Smith book the way I used to look forward to spending a weekend with a new Richard Laymon novel. In my view, there isn't higher praise than that."--Brian Keene, author of The Rising

In Depraved 2 a few of the characters return, Jessica Sloan, for instance. Jessica returns as a soldier and is given the deal of a lifetime. If she takes the deal she'll need to return to the darkside if she doesn't take it then she can continue her tour. Which one would you choose ?
There is also the introduction of new characters, Rich, pampered, much sought after Daphne and her best friend , Adam. Adam loves Daphne as a friend but also would love to get her in bed, daphne knows she has have any man, but her boyfriend William, has her heart, at this moment. When the two friends reach the barriers that surround Hopkins Bend, Daphne uses her sexual power over Adam to get him to go with her to explore Hopkins Bend, dispite the warnings that are posted. After the two friends are seperated, Daphne is captured in the woods & Daphne awakes in the specialty kitchen of a Mama Hunt's where she meets her captive Vivine Hunt.
Then there's hillbilly Jodi & her sister Sienna Baker who escaped Hopkins Bend before the swipe & clear. Sienna, the youngest has a hidden gift or is it a curse.
There's also Delmont & Arlene, Delmont and Jodi lust after each other the only problem is Delmont's wife Arlene. So they devised a plan to take care of Arlene, though it didn;t work wout asa they planned.
There are a few other charaters you'll meet during your read put those are the main charaters. As you can tell I didn't give many details away because I didn't want to take away your pleasure of knowing what'll happen to who.
Did I think Depraved 2 was as good or better than the first ? For me that's kind of hard to answer. There wasn't as much violence, blood & gore as the first. It's a really well written story with twists and turns. It keep my interest throughout and had me wondering about some of the charaters even after I put the down for the night. It was over 300 pages, which was a plus. I didn't feel the pages were filled with fillers, I felt that the story moved along nicely. There were some sentences where I did "speed read" through but that was only because I was anxious to see that was going to happen next, lol.
Towards the end zombies were introduced, which I giggled at, especially the way that they were brought back to life.
All in all I did enjoy Depraved 2, I think it was worth the time to read and look forward to reading Depraved 3 & 4.
If you think this might be a story you'd enjoy, read it and judge for yourself.
Thank you for reading my review.
Anyone who is worth his salt as a horror buff knows who Fred Dekker is. For those of you who don't, he made two absolutely genius horror-comedies in the 80s that were way ahead of their time. He did it on a limited budget with very little marketing. Those two movies were Night of the Creeps and Monster Squad. And, in my humble opinion, they are the epitome of horror-comedy. That being said, after making these amazing creature features, Dekker just about disappeared (truth be told Robocop 3 killed his career and he is involved with the new Predator 2018 movie) but, suffice to say that we lost a fantastic talent who should have been so much more.
So you must be wondering how this relates to Bryan Smith... when Dekker dropped off the face of the earth, I was constantly looking for a writer/director who would replace Dekker and give me the excitement and thrill of watching horror that he did. I was looking for that heart and sense of adventure. I was looking for a story that would pull me in and a movie that I would tell all my friends about (and anyone else who would listen to me).
That is also the same way I feel about Richard Layman's absence. Here was an author who would pull me in and make me excited to read. Every story was unique with twists and turns I totally did not see coming. I was invested. I could not wait to read his next book. Sadly, I have read them all. Now, I ask myself, what do I do? No author is giving me that same jolt.
Bryan Smith is the author that I have been looking for. He is the guy that tells a story like Mr. Layman. He gets you to invest and pulls the rug out from under you. His characters are not what you expect, and his stories end up in a direction you did not foresee. On top of that, he gives you a unique story with lots of heart.
To me, this is the highest praise I can give an author.
Thank you Bryan Smith ;)

Off to read number 3.

If you like 'believable' horror this isn't a book for you. But if you don't mind a completely weird, and far out, plot line which has been expertly penned then go for it.
As always Bryan has a habit of keeping you reading long after you ought to have stopped and gone to bed. I would definitely recommend this sequel, and according to the author's notes Depraved 3 is a real possibility (excellent news).
