The film that launched a thousand memes
Verified purchase
Despicable Me: 9 out of 10: Yes the movie that started an industry larger than some small nations GDPs Despicable Me is better remembered for what it launched than as a stand-alone movie itself. And that is a bit of a shame.

Despicable Me has one thing that none of the sequels had. A true villain. No, not the antagonist Vector I am talking about Gru. Gru, for at least the first half of this film, is a proper bad guy. When one of the girls apparently is crushed in a torture device Gru’s reaction is that his scheme will still work with two of them. This, of course, gives Gru a proper character arc in this film which leads to taking out the tissues at the end. (Why is it always kids movies that start the waterworks with me).

The rest of the film is also top notch with the minions ( Yes a slightly less obnoxious version of Ubisoft’s Rabbids) fully formed and delightful, Gru’s evil cohorts delightful and a macabre world that seems to live just on this side of an Addam’s family cartoon. The three girls are well drawn (character wise) with distinct and easily recognizable personalities and the whole story is some nice slapstick silliness with great call outs for the parent's in the room (That Godfather reference was particularly well placed)

Overall a great start to what ended up being a fun franchise that never was quite as good as its first outing.

Top Marks as an Engaging Kids' Treat
Verified purchase
This has been the single most favorite movie of all the movies we've gotten for the grandkids. It's funny, the minions are a hoot, the kids can follow the plot, and there are no sour or off-tune bits. There's a bit of edgy fun for grownups, but that doesn't mess with the timing or feel of the movie from the kids' point of view.

this was a great introduction to the minions and their quirky personas...

hello,
what a great story and plot. the bad guy (evil villain) has a heart. the abundance of minions makes this movie a lot more fun. they speak minion that has a little spanish, english, and a bunch of other things thrown in. fast talking, but understandable when the story line is followed. the creation of minions led to the follow up movies, but with greater digital features. this was a great introduction to the minions and their quirky personas...

Good story, but...

We got this because a friend recommended it.

It is a good plot, and enjoyable, and rewatchable.

My only complaint is the music... neither of us care for modern music (it just sounds like loud noise), and it's scattered throughout the film (I know that I'm in a small minority on this point, but, well... there it is. Tthis issue occurs, I think, in most, if not all of the series).

We've seen this one, 2, 3, and the Minions. We'd like to own them all except for #3, which seemed pretty weak to me.

Don't rent, BUY. You'll watch it more than once

This used to be free with prime and then went to either hbo or hulu, so I didn't need to purchase it till now. Because it's now gone from all platforms. And its one of those forever asked for movies by my toddlers. Trust me. Buy it. Because the renting it again and again will just cost you more money. Renting then having to buy it, because you didn't listen to me, will be more money as well lol. So just buy it and save 4 bux. If you have kids, this will keep them quiet for a while so you can get some work done.

one of the best movies out there- SO funny and clever
Verified purchase
For Christmas we got this and "Despicable Me 2" (the original one) for my eight year old daughter. We take her to see pretty much EVERY family-friendly movie that comes to the theaters, and I have to say, the Despicable Me series holds a special place in our hearts- not only is it wildly appealing to children, both movies are also very, very funny. And both films stand the test of repeated watching.

Out of both films, I like this one best- it's slightly more clever and "sharp" than the sequel. I still think it's one of the funniest films we've seen in the past several years (kid-friendly and non-kid-friendly movies included)- there are things in "Despicable Me" that will appeal to kids and then there are little things included throughout the movie that are designed to appeal to the grown-ups who watch the movie with them that the kids don't get. I kinda like that.

Whether you have seen this movie a zillion times or you haven't had a chance to watch it yet, I highly recommend just going ahead and adding it to your movie collection. It's silly, clever fun. And sometimes that makes for the very best movies.

Utterly adorable and with good morals
Verified purchase
Utterly adorable and with good morals. It drops a star for the scene where the little girl holds her breath to get her own way, but that's because I think it will give some children of an impressionable age the wrong ideas. The minions are so charming it's hard not to wish they were in every animated film. Carrell does a great job voicing the villainous Gru, who isn't nearly as bad as he'd like to be. The animation is so slick and seamless that one now takes for granted how much work goes into scenes of spraying water and disco lights. The ode to Saturday Night Fever was one of the most entertaining scenes and the minions, not unlike The Muppets are capable of doing comical things the kids will laugh at, but also slipping in humor the adults will like - all without going over the line for a family audience. Brilliant stuff!

This first movie is definitely better. :)

I was curious about the minions after everyone in my country when crazy on its toy figures.

So i went to watch Despicable me 2 at the cinema, it was fun and entertaining.., the minions were cute and funny.

But then again. I was more interested to know about the first movie, so i placed my order on this product.

[[ASIN:B0042U94UQ Despicable Me (Single-Disc Edition)]]

I am glad i am not disappointed. Infact, this first movie has a much better storyline that touches people's heart more. Especially about the plot on how the girls changes Gru's heart and they even tried to fulfilled his dream...

Gru, to me, is not really a villain, a bad guy maybe, but, more of the time, he sort of alittle mischievous and funny, i won't consider someone that loves kids as evil person so... :)

So.., if you have never watch this before, i would recommend this movie, as you will find more meaningful and touching story in than the second one.

I personally enjoy this more than despicable me 2, which mainly focus on the minions... Thus, kids will love the minions more, but i have to love Gru after watching this... :)

The content of this piece of DVD is fair, the making of the movie is divided to several different parts, it also have interactive quizzes if you want to have some fun. :)

Overall, Good product, great animation movie, and love the story. :)
