There are some twist and turns with action/adventure and some romance. I really liked the world the author built up. I found it interesting and different. I especially liked the acid rain and the huge bats and how everyone still go about their way.
Destiny Gift is the first book by Juliana Haygert that I have read. When I first saw the cover for this book I was curious, excited and more than a little eager to start reading. Granted, it ended up on my to-be-read shelf for a good while. When I started reading this book I had high hopes and about moderate expectations. This book has quite a few ups and downs. There are moments of where I honestly questioned whether the characters were in college or high school. Nadine is a good character but sometimes I honestly questioned what was going on with her. Quite often she acts like she could care less about the visions getting her into trouble at her job, knowing she needs it. She quickly goes from being on-time, someone you can view as a good role model to being late more often than not. I guess you could say I had higher expectations of her and expected her to have a good head on her shoulders since so much of what she is doing is for her family and to help them. I like that the author gives us some backstory on Nadine and on how the world gets to be the way that it is. While it comes in a roundabout way, I appreciate that we get to learn it. I like the variety of characters that we get and how each one is so unique.
There is a balance of dark and light in this book. There are dark characters and there are light characters and then there are the ever-engaging grey characters. There is one spelling error that I caught in this book: seater should be sweater. I wish that this story had flowed better. It has a lot of here...there...over here...and then it finally buckles down and stays focused. For over half the story we follow Nadine around as she has her visions, wishes she could meet Victor and then wonders about following her visions when she feels a pull. Sometimes Nadine can really be frustrating and irritating. When things don't go well with Victor she literally goes home and pouts! She hides away for several days, skips work all because things aren't how she thought! Anyone with sense would know that while she has been having visions of him, doesn't mean he is or that he should be falling head over heels for her shortly after meeting. It was just moments like that that I honestly wanted her to grow up.
This book has a lot going for it. There is a heavy air of mystery and danger throughout. Once the pieces start to come together and fall into place a lot of it starts making sense. You begin to see the truth of what is going on and the story becomes extremely engaging. I like the twists tha the author writes into the story. Though if you are paying attention, you'll piece it together before the reveal.
I am rating this book 4 out of 5 stars. I honestly wanted to be able to say I loved this story, but there were moments of where I considered putting it down. I'm gad I didn't though because I would have missed out. I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series and finding out what happens next. There is so much going on and balance must be restored, but I want to know what is going to happen with Nadine, Micah and Victor. The truth has been revealed, so what will they do with what they now know? If you're looking for a good story, pick this book up. There will be some spots you'll have to push through but I promise it will be worth it.

I liked the character interaction so maybe a different genre, or even the next book, is where this author shines :-).
