About the author

Lorne McMillan grew up in Southern Ontario. He loved to read The Three Investigators, and then The Hardy Boys, as well as write stories about superheroes. Then he read “Salem’s Lot” by Stephen King, and his life changed forever. He fell in love with both reading and writing horror stories. He currently still resides in Southern Ontario with his wife and two of his three children. He spends his time writing, reading, and watching hockey, when it’s on.

For me to appreciate a fictional ghost story, allowing for a willing suspension of disbelief, there has to be an element of plausibility. Although the tale begins reasonably well, I found the physical violence used by the ghosts towards the living, and many of the methods Hayle uses to combat it, to be unbelievable to the point of ridiculous. There are no explanations given as to why Wordsworth has unleashed the ghosts, and the novel ends on a cliff-hanger.
The author uses some odd phrasing in his writing – ‘the detective’s head knocking off the ceiling.’ – which makes it read as though English may not be his first language. There are also a number of blatant errors which suggest a lack of proof reading or editing – ‘The cop laughed as he pounded the detective with a hard fish (fist?)…’ There are also some formatting issues, such as: a blank line after every paragraph; indents at the beginning of each chapter; and chapter fifteen being duplicated as chapter sixteen.
This novel is the first book in a series of three, but I will not be reading any further.
