King me baby!!! Take a look inside this book and meet King Chrysalis a talented artist with a gentle spirit, but has a heart full of bitterness. He sees the world or the people in it as selfish. He then meets Suri a beautiful black queen, who knows herself, reeks of confidence, and has a wonderful sense of humor. This book is one of Tiana Laveen's greatest writings. What I loved most about it is the passion that King holds inside of him. Not just his passion for Suri, but the passion he has for his art and making it in the world. When the world seemed stacked against him, he fought the good fight and did not give up. His issues from his past were trapped in his heart but when Suri stepped in she taught how to have a change of heart. The message that I received from this book was not to let fear or your past define who you are in the present. Do not be afraid to take risks that may take you to the next level and don't let your past keep you trapped in the past. You must somehow learn to release it if you want to move forward in your future.

King and Suri are the lovers in this romantic novel but the written word is the real star. Ms. Laverne speaks of life as art. Like life not all art is beautiful but unlike an artistic masterpiece life is always in flux ever changing ever influenced by outside forces. Both King and Suri due to trauma inflicted earlier in their lives are afraid of commitment. Having both been promiscuous neither wants to continue meaningless encounters. Initially attacked by the others physical beauty through a small misunderstanding they discover qualities they truly enjoy in each other. What they learn to create with each other is indeed greater than the sum of two parts.
Kings friends an family are extraordinary. Starting with his best friend Slade who is a way over the top heterosexual dancer and model. Friends since high school they push buttons no one else could. Ricky the mysterious boss is an older wealthy connected gentleman who has decided to be a mentor. King's Brazilian mother divorces his Irish father and marries his Greek pediatrician stepfather who adopts him and gives him two younger brothers. King's father an former alcoholic is large and incharge plus he doesn't care for his ex-wife or her husband at all. That makes for a few tense moments for King.
Suri's mom finds out she is pregnant with a married man's child who has two other children. That doesn't make a happy situation. None of that situation is Suri's fault but the other family chooses to shun her. A beautiful woman her mother has given up on finding happiness yet admires and praises her daughter for bold choices in her life.
Complicated lives are described in brilliant prose. Suri description of beta men versus alpha males is brilliant. Many passages had me lol and retelling them to friends and family.
The difference between awarding four stars rather than five usually comes down to how drawn into the lives of characters I become. I really cared about how these characters resolved their issues. The HEA is not always assured but it's always nice when the HEA is so well deserved.
Well worth the time and investment.

I just read King’s story and wasn’t that invested in the characters... as I’ve usually done with TL’s protags.
I wasn’t impressed with heroine Suri. King was basically void of 𝐃𝐄𝐕𝐈𝐀𝐍𝐓 tendencies, he was quite tame actually. A good, darkly handsome boyfriend with great c* c.k-game. It leaves the book’s title purposeless. And with a surname like Chrysalis I was expecting a stupendous rebirth or something memorable 🦋 from King.
I’ve noticed as of late, that her h/Hs have become a little too blah for my tastes.
Suri and King come across as merely 2-dimensional MCs, not a lot of character growth, or change from start to finish in duration of the romance . There is a bit of family drama thrown in to stir the pot but I was still unmoved.
The epilogue ended in a sweet and satisfying note and despite lackluster MCs, I still enjoyed 𝐃𝐄𝐕𝐈𝐀𝐍𝐓.

Laveen’s writing is a full blown reader experience from a very personal introduction preceded by trigger warnings before you dive into the story. A well-rounded playlist sits in the rear of the book if you want to play along as you read. Laveen uses a wide brush to paint a broad stroke of wide details, narrowing down to minute flicks of the tip with even splatters of interest and depth. This book saturates the mind and palate with a cacophony of emotions taking you on a hot, seedy, a dark trip into the mind of a deviant. Well done.

Once again, this is another hit, for me at least. Since I indulge in a lot of romance, I notice that repetition is almost inevitable. I don't experience that much with Tiana Laveen. In my opinion each character is there own as if she models each character after different people. The characters conversation and personality are all different. I can read 2 different books from the author and know that each character is different and not some cookie cutter from another story.... This is just my opinion of course.

Now about the story, of course I enjoy the characters especially Suri and her sense of humor and outlook on life. I can relate to her and like my characters to have a little human characteristics instead of the bland things. Anywho great story. Enjoy
