Violet Parker knows better than to play with devils. They always cheat, especially when lives are at stake. Deadwood’s charming, troublemaking, and soul-sucking devils are no different, and they’re biting at her heels. But the clock is ticking and Violet has no choice—she must risk her life to save her treasured Aunt Zoe. With any luck, she might be able to trick the devils and beat the old terrors at their own game. If not, Deadwood could end up short one Executioner. “Executioners don't duck, they swing.” ~Violet Parker

What bothered me and made me give this a 4 star review was the excessive bickering and sniping going on between Violet and Cooper, Violet and Hawke, Natalie and Hawke, etc. The first third of the book was padded with too much of this inane chatter. I started skipping whole pages because it was just more and more of the same. Is this what is supposed to make this series "humorous"? For me, it just makes it tedious. Ann Charles needs to tighten up the narrative and edit out the excessive and childish blathering. I especially think the way Violet and Cooper continue to trade barbs is too much. I thought they had moved past that.
The other thing I was disappointed in was the way that the relationship between Natalie and Cooper advanced so significantly in a different series! It seems like a blatant and manipulative move to drum up readers for the Jackrabbit Junction series. I read the first three books of that series and really enjoyed the first one, was disappointed with the second, and hated the third so much I decided I was not going to continue with the series. It devolved into just a bunch of women constantly arguing with each other and the men in their lives. The mysteries had become not really mysteries, just tissue thin background noise. So I won't go back to reading these books just to read about Cooper and Natalie hooking up. I will just continue to feel this sense of betrayal.
From page one, this book just takes off and the hits just keep coming. There is enough devilry to keep your heart pumping but handed out with enough humor to tickle your funny bone with some laugh out loud moments, and enough heart to keep those strings strumming. Also, be ready for a few nail-biting and even some "AWW" inspiring moments, and let's not forget the sizzle. This book really does have it all. What a fantastic addition to an already amazing series! And Ann, I sure am glad it's only The End..for now.
Her main character, Violet, is like many of us. Single mom and working her butt off to take care of her precocious twins. Great, kooky best friend Natalie, and a truly cool and wonderful aunt. I hope my nieces think of me that way! A few hotties are thrown in to make you swoon and of course, the nemeses are always there to get you riled up. Oh, and Violet's cranky, shotgun-toting sidekick is a hoot!.
Her newest book, #11 Devil Days in Deadwood, has just been released. You can find it on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Apple books, and more.
She also has a couple of other series that tie into this series:
Jackrabbit Junction, where you get to meet Natalie's looney cousins;
Dig Site, Violet's brother is an archeologist who seems to find the best, and sometimes the strangest, artifacts on his digs;
Deadwood Undertaker, this is a prequel of sorts to the Deadwood series.
She has another series I haven't read yet, but I'm sure her style will come through and I will love it just the same.
Anyway. Violet's being her usual offbeat (in a good way), chaotic (also in a good way) self and I still like her even if I'm too addlebrained to read this series in order. She and Doc are pretty tight. Nat and Coop are steaming things up (which is one of the things I missed when I skipped those two books? I guess? I'll know soon enough!). Harvey is...well, Harvey is Harvey and he's a hoot no matter what.
Demons are on the loose (among other things, some of which miiiiight be Violet's fault) and Vi and her crew are on the case. It's never a dull moment with these guys, is it?
Now I'm going to go catch up on this series once and for all and NOT READ THEM OUT OF ORDER ANYMORE. (At this point, I just might have to commit to a full series, in-order read in the near future. Because some things just need to be done.)

What I particularly liked with this eleventh book in the Deadwood series was the development of some of the secondary characters, such as Cornelius and Prudence. They became much more three dimensional in this novel, fleshed out and made real in my head. It was wonderful to see how relationships have developed and solidified over time, with friends becoming family.
Particularly good to see the humour, respect and friendship between Violet and Cooper in the moments when they're together. A good continuation of the flirtation between Nat and Cooper too (you need to read book 5 of the Jackrabbit Junction series to find out what happened in Arizona). Cooper may have bitten off more than such a straight laced law dog can chew with Nat.
The resolution to the Hungarian Devil situation was both entertaining and tense; I feel like the author got the balance exactly right in the way things went. Violet's final conclusion was exactly what that storyline needed for everything to feel right.
I love Ann Charles style of writing. She writes with a wonderful mix of humour and paranormal thrills, with the added element of romance. Her characters have become people whose lives I can't wait to catch up on and see what they're up to. I genuinely couldn't put the book down, I kept thinking "one more chapter". For me, that's a sign of a good book.
