The town of Four Paths is haunted by a monster that comes in a mist. The mist devours its victims. Usually, this monster only takes one but lately the death rate has increased. Four founding families, each with their own supernatural abilities, are honored in the town with protecting the people against the mist. Things really start to change when Violet Saunders moves back to town after her sister dies only to discover abilities she didn't know she possessed in a haunted town that needs her more than ever.

There are alot of political dynamics in this town because of certain founding families that are fighting to maintain their power in a town who is losing faith in their ability to protect them. With so many deaths, a time is coming when the feuding of these founding families needs to be set aside in order to defeat an ancient evil.

This felt very supernatural with all the mist and the mystery surrounding the mist; but all the mystery also left me breathless by the end and wanting this story to never be over with. I make no underestimation when I say I was on the literal edge of my seat when all the big reveals started taking place and I couldn't have been happier with this.

There was so much lore to the background of this story and felt so rich in history. I absolutely loved how they captured the dynamics with regards to the four family's founding children, and how the feuding between the families effected those dynamics. There was enough tension to keep things interesting, but not so much that relationships couldn't be formed and built upon.

Also, there was rep for LGBTQ+ which was super refreshing in a story like this. Usually this rep dominates contemporary only and it was well placed throughout this book.

I absolutely loved this and I need the sequel immediately!

Started out solid, on it's way to being 5 stars. It has the same feel as the Raven Boys which I loved. The writing style is engaging. The plot and pacing began sputtering out and I lost interest about halfway through. I thought I would devour the Devouring Gray but I ended up lightly snacking on it.

Cliffhanger ending!
Thanks to NetGalley and Disney Hyperion for the opportunity to read and review The Devouring Gray by Christine Lynn Herman.
A mix of characters is introduced in the first few chapters. They all have something in common; they’re all descended from the main four families that have resided in Four Paths for decades. These families have protected the town from the Beast that resides in the mysterious and frightening Gray. Hawthorne, Carlisle, Saunders and Sullivan are the four head families. Violet Saunders has recently moved to Four Paths with her mother, Juniper. It’s just the two of them since Violet’s sister and father have both passed away. Justin and May Hawthorne are the children of the sheriff of Four Paths, their mother Augusta. Violet and Juniper live with Darla, Juniper’s sister. Harper Carlisle lost a hand earlier and she keeps training to still be strong and helpful; she has four siblings. Isaac Sullivan is part of the fourth founding family but the rest of his family is gone, in one way or another. Secrecy seems to be the rule between families and hiding truths from the Four Paths citizens is how the heads of the families claim to keep the town safe. Secrets are painfully revealed and trust is broken. The teenagers’ lives and relationships all intertwine and complicate matters because the teens don’t want the secrecy. They want honesty and openness. The teens also get thrown into violence and deception by the Powers that run the town. They each have to decide who they will be loyal to and what they will do with their own powers and futures. The story ends with a bit of a cliffhanger and I’m expecting the sequel to shine more light on Isaac’s mysterious family. 4 stars for a supernatural story that has much more to tell!

Atmospheric and Intriguing

The first book in the Devouring Gray series, and the second of three 2019 debuts I’ve been looking forward to reading (Wicked Saints – Emily A Duncan.. so good! And Wilder Girls – Rory Power, not yet released). And ya know what? I liked this book. A lot.

The funny thing with this was I didn’t actually realize how invested I’d gotten in these characters until two key scenes toward the end of the book and I just got all the feels. That sneaky author went and got me!

But yeah, this was atmospheric, well written and developed and I loved the way the town, the adults, the history and the teens all entwined on top of each other.

The ‘monster’ was interesting and intriguing, and the story left me with questions, yet it felt complete in itself as well. I’ll definitely be reading on when the next book is released. I love CLH’s style, there’s a lot of care and love in this book. Plus, super inclusive, and I loved that!

Can’t wait for more!!

Seventeen-year-old Violet Saunders and her mother, Juniper, return to Juniper's childhood home town of Four Paths. Violet finds both the town and the people who live there rather strange. The townspeople revere the members of certain families - the Hawthornes, the Carlisles, the Sullivans, and the Saunders, but after Violet experiences the Gray and the powers of those families she begins to wonder if it is respect or fear that the town feels.

What an incredibly enjoyable book which kept my attention rapt throughout. Unlike some YA paranormal books, the focus wasn't on relationships which was great. It meant that the plot took center stage and it rattles along a fast pace. I wasn't sure about them at first but I grew to like some of the members of the Founder families - Justin Hawthorne, Harper Carlisle, Isaac Sullivan, and of course, Violet Saunders. Each of them have their own struggles but they eventually find a way to work together to help save the town and their own families. I most definitely want to read the next one.

a good foundation for a duology

the strengths of this book is the setting of Four Paths, a small town that nobody can escape from – a prison of the Founders’s own working. however, it echoed too much of the raven cycle for me in its call to the character archetypes, backstories, desire and drive, stakes, etc. although there was a uniqueness of ‘the beast’ as a vehicle to the moral and the brutal failings of human beings, i am interested in delving into how ‘altruism’ and ‘power relations’ are explored more closely in the second-half of this duology. with that being said, the dialogue at times felt forced as well as the description of the characters’ emotions reading as two-dimensional. this is definitely an ambitious and interesting accomplishment for a debut novel, i have no doubts about it; however, one of the central issues i encountered with this novel was the pacing. two or three small, ambiguous events occurred from the first act through the second. the third act, however, helped draw together all the loose ends and offer some anticipation for each scene. with this being said, the climax of the story and the overall defeat—or, perhaps ‘wounding’ is more accurate?—of the beast and violet’s fulfilment of her ritual left much to desire. it felt far too easy given the build-up and pacing of the novel. aside from this, i did enjoy the falling climax and witnessing the beginning steps of isaac’s self-revelation and need to grow into himself. i look forward to reading more about his character in the second-half. reading back, this may seem like a negative review, but i promise it is not. for someone who is used to reading the likes of tartt, yanagihara, kerouac, ishiguro, etc., i have to keep in mind the target age-range and audience for a young adult novel like this. all ages can enjoy ya, of course, but with my particular tastes there is no doubt that i would have enjoyed it far more a few years back. overall, this read is definitely worthwhile if you’re looking for an ensemble cast struggling with trauma, grief, morality, and identity. i very much anticipate the author’s future works and wish her the best in her literary growth.
