Red Lagoe grew up on 80s horror and carried her paranoia of slashers and sewer creatures into adulthood.
When she’s not spewing her horror-ridden mind onto the page, or substituting at the elementary school like a normal upstanding citizen, Red enjoys amateur astronomy, and can be found lingering in the inky shadows among beasts for a better view of the stars.
Red's short story collection Lucid Screams released in February 2020. She is a staff writer for Crystal Lake Publishing's Still Water Bay series. Her stories have appeared in Dark Moon Digest, Sinister Smile Press's If I Die Before I Wake, volumes 1, 2, & 3, Crystal Lake Publishing’s Shallow Waters Volumes 1,2, 3&4, Trembling with Fear’s Year Two anthology, Owl Hollow Press’ Under the Full Moon’s Light anthology, and more. For a young Scott Harper growing up in 1970’s Southern California, the world was just a tad dull and unimaginative. He found a creative outlet in the world of Marvel Comics, fervidly devouring the monthly adventures of Iron Man, Hulk, and Captain America. Later, his tastes turned toward the Marvel black and white magazines’ more esoteric horror province, faithfully following titles such as Dracula Lives! and Tales of the Zombie. Influenced by these works and such great authors as Bram Stoker, John Steakley, and Marv Wolfman, Scott’s unique writing style combines horror and fantasy elements with superhero-style action. When not writing, Scott spends his time either reading, working out at the gym, adding to his model collection, or walking his two dogs. He lives in California with his wife and son.

Once an operating room registered nurse, Bridgett Nelson so enjoyed playing with human organs, she decided to turn her macabre interest into a horror writing career. She loves bubble baths (because nothing says spooooky writer like orange-scented bubbles), hates not knowing what’s swimming in the water with her, lives for Halloween season (but loathes chainsaw-wielding dudes in haunted houses), adores her West Virginia University Mountaineers, is very pro-Oxford comma, and thinks bananas are absolutely disgusting.
She was a 2022 Michael Knost "Wings" award nominee, and won second place (out of fourteen contestants) in the '22 Gross-Out contest at KillerCon in Austin, Texas.
Bridgett has contributed to multiple anthologies, including COUNTING BODIES LIKE SHEEP, edited by K Trap Jones. Her debut collection, A BOUQUET OF VISCERA, is available now!

Tattooed vegan dog lover writing in and about the Pacific Northwest & Alaska.
Frank Beghin is a University of Toronto graduate, married father of two, and a writer of literary fiction and poetry.
I'm an author and musician (plus sometime editor, visual artist, scriptwriter, composer, and all-round Renaissance man) based in Adelaide, South Australia. I've had over sixty short stories and poems published around the world thus far; I've always written, but for many years it came second to trying to establish a career in music. I write dark fiction, horror for the most part, though I take an eclectic angle to all things. My approach to writing is character-focused, broad-minded, and averse to standard tropes.
I was shortlisted for a 2020 Shirley Jackson Award for Best Novelette ("Heritage Hill") and I won two categories in the 2019 Australian Shadows Awards: Best Short Story ("Steadfast Shadowsong") and the Paul Haines Award for Long Fiction ("Supermassive Black Mass"). My work has been shortlisted three other times for the Shadows Awards ("The Heart of the Mission", 2016; "This Impossible Gift", 2017; "Vision Thing", 2020), three times for the Aurealis Awards ("Andromeda Ascends", 2018; "Supermassive Black Mass", 2019; "Pilgrimage", 2019), and once for the Washington Science Fiction Association Small Press Award ("Heritage Hill", 2020). I also served as a reader and judge for the 2016 and 2017 Aurealis Awards — acting as Panel Convenor the second year — and for the 2018 and 2019 Australian Shadows Awards.
My first collection of short stories, IF ONLY TONIGHT WE COULD SLEEP, was released by Things in the Well on January 31, 2020. My first novel, MIDNIGHT IN THE CHAPEL OF LOVE, was published by JournalStone on January 29, 2021.
I've performed spoken word shows with punk poets Paroxysm Press, including three Adelaide Fringe gigs, and with the SA Writers Centre — the latter in the West Terrace Cemetery. I attended MAPS Film School in 2010 and since then I have been sporadically involved in short films and live videos as a scriptwriter, director, editor, producer, composer, grip, and (gasp!) actor. My most recent film work has been as an extra in a number of club scenes for Dick Dale's forthcoming splatterpunk feature RIBSPREADER. I play bass and other instruments, sing, write songs, edit videos, create album sleeves, and do all sorts of other things in the progressive/alternative rock/metal bands Blood Red Renaissance (on hiatus since 2013) and icecocoon. I've so far played on seven albums, three EPs, and seven singles, and I've gigged extensively with numerous bands and one-offs.
I currently live in Somerton Park.

Overall Thoughts
This was a fantastic short story anthology. The best anthology I have read so far in my life. Each story was very well written. I was impressed with how the authors could pull me in with only about 20 pages to do so. Different interesting creatures throughout made this a great reading experience. This is creature horror at its best. I would recommend checking out this anthology and all the others in the Better Off Dead Series.
Thoughts on Individual Stories (Note: All these stories were very high quality. I designated the stories that resonated the most with me 5 stars.)
Forward by Jeff Strand managed to be hilarious and creepy. It had me cackling out loud. 5 stars
A More Than Canine Hunger by Scotty Milder: 5 stars, Beautiful, atmospheric story of a snowy day in Colorado. Wonderful character development of a young boy thinking about his family.
The Alarabi by Elena Gomel-5 stars, Very unique premise unlike anything I have read. This was a beautifully written story that created quite a creepy image in the mind.
Scarecrow by Hannah O’Doom- 4.5 stars, This was a really impressive story with great character development of the main character, a teen girl who is bullied.
Ismini and Blood of the Bullman- 4.5 stars Brutal battle involving a seemingly unbeatable creature. The introduction of a second creature brought the story to a whole different level.
Invader by Bridgett Nelson- 5 stars, Spurned high school senior gets revenge. Loved the beautiful Northwest USA island setting.
Seven Years Bad Luck by Brian Asman- 4.5 stars, Cute new romance comes with some deadly baggage attached. This story actually made mirrors scary.
The Growth by Sandra Stephens-5 stars, A gruesome story of killer nature. I was so invested in the characters. This story was bleak, emotional, and full of body horror.
The Kelpie of Loch Ness by Henry Herz- 4.5 stars, Movie crew filming in Scottland encounter many kinds of creatures.
The House on the Hill by R.E. Sargent- 5 stars, Alternating chapters between a man who is dealing with the loss of his wife and really awesome scenes from a creature’s perspective.
Caecillica by Red Lagoe- 5 stars, Complicated characters, dark revelations, and a creepy story too. Fantastic!
Magic Shadows by Frank Beghin-5 stars, This was a really sad and scary story that could be triggering to some. It blew me away though! A stuffed animal protects a young girl after her family cannot.
Jack of Spades by Kevin M. Folliard- 4.5 stars, This was a coming of age story with a dangerous game. It includes a very unique creature.
The Mortality of Morris Meridian by Steven Pajak- 5 stars, A wonderful story about a man who befriends a very likable creature during World War 2.
The Black Regent by Matthew R. Davis- 4.5 stars, This creepy tale made me nostalgic for video stores and old theaters.
Did I mention yet that Jeff Strand writes the foreword for this collection? An epic, wildly appropriate foreword that only Jeff Strand could write kicks off this tome of terror. It is everything that we have come to know and love about Jeff Strand.
One of my favorites, “Scarecrow”, by Hannah O’Doom, shows us that everything comes with a price. When a young girl makes the acquaintance of something ancient in the woods, the offer of a wish seems too good to be true, but what harm could one simple wish do?
Another standout for me was “Invader” by Bridgett Nelson. This story follows a young woman, dealing with the pressures of her last year of high school, seeks out an afternoon of relaxation on a private beach, that she has somehow never been to, despite living on the island all her life, when she sees something ancient and terrible arise from the depths of the ocean, something she wouldn’t soon forget.
There are 14 amazing stories in this anthology by some of the best horror writers around. This was an awesome way to discover some new to me writers and read some great horror all at the same time. Do yourself a favor and add this collection to your “to be read” pile as soon as you can.
The forward was written by Jeff Strand. It was creative and comical. What a great introduction! Made me chuckle!

With a diverse panel of authors pulling together a book of anthologies from a prompt of 'Nightmare Creatures' is what made this a fun reading experience. I love how each has their own unique writing style and creativity. There are all types of creatures written in these stories. Ones that may just haunt you in your sleep!!
I must share some honesty, none of these scared me, as it actually takes quite a bit to do so. But it does not detract from the enjoyment of reading and of seeing the creativity from each authors mind.
Anyone who enjoys anthologies and horror stories filled with creepy creatures should read these.
