About the Author

Peter L. Falkingham is Lecturer in Vertebrate Biology in the School of Natural Sciences and Psychology at Liverpool John Moore's University, United Kingdom.

Daniel Marty is a research paleontologist at the "Paleontology A16" (Office de la culture, Canton Jura, Switzerland).

Annette Richter is Senior Custodian of Earth Sciences and head of the Natural History Department at the Lower Saxony State Museum at Hannover.

Dr Peter L. Falkingham is a Reader in Vertebrate Biology at Liverpool John Moores University, UK. In 2003 he was awarded a BSc in Biology and Geology from the University of Bristol, and a year later an MSc in Computer Science from that same institution. He then went on to carry out a PhD at the University of Manchester on Computer Simulation of Dinosaur Tracks, which he completed in 2010. In 2012, Peter was awarded a Marie Curie International Outgoing Fellowship which he held at the Royal Veterinary College, London, and Brown University, USA. Falkingham's research has primarily concerned dinosaur footprints, but has also covered body mass evolution, animal hydrodynamics, and digitization methods. Excellent book on dinosaur tracks, beautiful photographs

This is a large volume (400 pp., 4.5 lbs.) resulting from a dinosaur track symposium held in 2011 in Germany. Thus these papers represent an up-to-date review of techniques and approaches to the study of dinosaur tracks. There are 23 papers and reviews, all in English. While mostly concerned with European sites, there are some papers on North American sites, and much discussion of American tracks within most of the papers.
These papers are written by scientists for scientists, so they are technical. But there are sections on the basics, giving introductions to the study of ichnology, principles of sedimentology and track formation, and "dinosaur track terminology", all of which give a good background to the amateur. I learned a lot from these chapters, and would recommend this book to the interested nonprofessional on this basis alone. The book is well illustrated, mostly in color, which is unusual in books of this sort. It can be tedious browsing page after page of black and white track photos, but this is not the case here. It is a beautiful and stimulating book to leaf through. Also, this book is currently available at a discounted price from many sellers, and is well worth picking up.
