How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzed reviews to verify trustworthiness.

4.0 out of 5 starsGood read for those loving underdog stories
Reviewed in the United States on September 19, 2016
What happens when a prince born with a birth defect that makes him physically weak is seen as a threat to ascension to a throne by his siblings? Bullying and then assassination attempts, that's what. Good thing Prince Pol is intelligent and overly mature for his young age and he has some very solid allies who help him avert death. Of course the path through this nest of adders is sometimes bloody and not without losses. As he tries to weave a safe path through treacherous waters, Prince Pol learns about patterns in life around him and is able to extend that to basic magic which helps him survive overwhelming odds. By the end of the story he's learned a few hard truths, especially that friends are more trustworthy than the people he called family.

While I sometimes found it difficult to fully accept the murderous motivations of all his siblings, the story was otherwise believable and did a decent job of keeping you in suspense for the next plot he'd have to overcome. There were moments in the middle where the pacing slowed down but then it would pick back up as another plot to take the prince's life happened. I guess the only other negative I came across was a lack of feeling any real emotion when some people died.

I liked how there were multiple mini plot arcs yet an overall arc that was solved right before the end, making for a decent conclusion. And yet there are a few mysteries sprinkled in to make the reader want to read more, but without creating a serious cliffhanger that would make you want to scream.

I liked the pattern take on magic and felt the world building was in general pretty decent. I also felt the magic was fairly well balanced with the kid's current set of foes - not too overpowered. And while he came up with new ways to use his ability, he was also limited in how much he could do. Though I'm sure he will increase in power over the next books and can't wait to see him eventually return and kick some butt!

In summary, I liked this story well enough to want book 2 and I'm going to take a look at the other books this author has published. If you are looking for a 'puny kid overcoming severe odds using his intellect and developing magic' type story, then this is one you'll probably enjoy.

3.0 out of 5 starsGreat story idea. Pretty lousy execution.

2.5 Stars.

I read the downloadable sample and looked at the reviews - glowing - and gave the book a shot. I'm sad to say that I have no idea what those glowing reviews are talking about. The book series is based on a short story the author wrote years ago. It should have remained a short story. This book should be about 200 pages thinner. It must have been cleared by the Department for Redundancy Department. (I'll save you some reading. Say the word "pattern" or "patterns" about 5 million times. You just read the book.)

SPOILER ALERT! Don't read the next line if you still want to read the book.
Assassination attempt on Pol orchestrated by his hateful siblings. Schooling for Pol. Teach Pol to see & tweak patterns. Rinse. Repeat.

Pros:
+ Good idea for a novel (different take on "magic" and what a "hero" looks like)
+ A couple of the characters, though shallow, were interesting
+ A few good chuckles
+ Kindle edition is $3.99

Cons:
- Soul sapping repetition will force you to make a decision: Continue to read because you paid good money or stop and cut your loss?
- ALL characters are shallower than a kiddie wading pool.
- Author does not describe much of anything. I know very little about the kingdom and its people. That makes me not care.
- Sloppy writing, editing, and grammar. Did Amazon do a poor job of turning it into an eBook? Or is the publisher shoddy?
Maybe I'm picky, but sloppy editing/writing pulls me out of a story and I find that annoying.

Pol, I hope you get justice someday and live long enough to become king. I just won't be reading about it. Goodbye, Pol.

ABC
3.0 out of 5 stars YA with decent world building ruined by one dimensional story and characters
Reviewed in the United States on October 30, 2016

Poldon, I'd really like to give you a good review, but I'm afraid that the plot has bound me to give you an apathetic review. You'll understand right? I know that you're very special and will probably be a powerful person doing great things, but your wicked siblings and cold-hearted father just scare me too much. What? You say you understand. I knew you would. You're super special after all...

Meh. I really pushed through this. The characters are one-dimensional and really only serve to frame the MC. This could be forgiven if the MC actually progressed as a character, but we leave him in essentially the same mindset with which we begin. The cast is full of terrible people doing terrible things to the MC while a majority of other characters sit by because... well plot. They don't do anything because the plot simply won't allow it.

The story telling is just that - telling. There exist little showing. We are constantly fed how Poldon (and every one else) feels. It's a torrent of emotion foisted upon us.

The world building is a nice change. There are some interesting lore elements, and the world's structure has logic (if somewhat simple at times).

I try to read three books in a series to make a judgement. I did. I don’t like these books, and I do not enjoy the author’s work.

Apparently, the only way I can get them to stop showing up in my recommended works is to show up here and tell everyone they were not for me.

1st. Needs editor. Too many sentences are incomplete.

2. Many crimes are investigated but the mc's inability to dispense justice leaves you frustrated.

One thing I gotta say is the villains are easy to hate and the characters were pretty well written. Definitely buying the sequels.

I'll be honest, I haven't finished the book. At about 60%, I gave up. The writing is stilted and choppy, and I honestly, just don't care. I'm not sure I've ever not finished a book before

I read some of the reviews and they sounded good. but do NOT be fooled. this is a one dimensional book. I think it was written by a 3rd grader. I read 2 chapters and it just kept getting worse, not the story line which is interesting. but the characters, the way it is written is flat, its like reading 3 plus 2 equal 4, or this is black and this is gray and this is white. now repeat. I thought the main character was 8 and then it says he is 14. he doesn't act 14. wouldn't you know if 3 of your siblings hated you by 14? does your mother have to sit down and explain that she and he have no power and the king is giving her kingdom to someone else? really? at 14 you have to have it spelled out. this is the fault of the book it spells out in first person what is happening. try reading something else this book is NOT worth the price.

The story is pretty good for the book, it just feels kind of stiff at times. It doesn't have a very good flow to it overall.

World is interesting though.

I wiped my ass with this book. It was like reading someone else's boring vacation. The plot was tedious and didn't have enough our hero Grostin defending his house from his step mothers bastard or the good king Colvin who just can't seem to get it thru his head that his children see a monster in their house that for some reason they can only beat up even though no one really gives a damn. The plot holes in this book are so thick it should be titled "a window into nothing". The only reason this book gets two stars is due to the pattern concept which was nice only for the author to throw in a "plot twist" at the end that made the main character a freak instead of the victim and his "step brothers/sisters" into the templars that they are. Royalty is all about bloodlines . I mean wtf.
