It's the beginning of summer break, and high school English teacher Shannon Parker is ready to relax poolside with some red wine and a good book. She's friggin' earned it! But first - a little shopping, à la fancy estate auction.
Surrounded by old folks and even older artifacts, Shannon never expects to find something that shocks her down to her very core: an ancient vase, complete with a beautiful painting of a goddess that looks just like her. And just as she's stealing away with her seriously suspicious purchase, she's magically thrown into the world of Partholon, where not only has she taken the place of Rhiannon, Goddess Incarnate and Epona's Chosen, but she's due to be married to a surly (but oh-so-handsome) High Shaman centaur, ClanFintan.
But serving as Epona's Chosen isn't just luxury baths and buff horse-guys. A dark power grows in the wastelands to the north, and Rhiannon will need much more than just the favor of Epona to protect the land - and the man - she's grown to love.

It seemed to me as though the author created interesting characters that happened to be centaurs, and had them do the sorts of things interesting characters would do in accordance with the plot, but then glossing over the fact that some of the things would be almost impossible for centaurs to do. The way the romantic interest was written (first suspicion, then admiration, then love) was classic— but I felt that the means of achieving inter-species coitus was deus ex machina at best.
On the other hand, every reader will leave the book convinced that Oklahoma teachers are desperately underpaid and undervalued, which is true (although there are 14 or 15 states where the pay is even worse!). The protagonist’s comments about teaching high school students were real high points in the book, and the crossover of “teacher voice” and the dreaded “teacher stare” to a medieval Celtic fantasy world were delightful. If you can control a class of 28 hormonally-challenged sixteen year olds who’d rather be elsewhere, then a group of macho generals, say, won’t intimidate you much.
[All teachers are seriously underpaid, in the United States and elsewhere. Why do we pay football players, who contribute some entertainment value to our culture, millions of dollars, and teachers, responsible for educating our children, so very little? The minimum salary for a brand new rookie NFL player is $480,000 a year. The salary of an experienced high school teacher is just $33,000 to $46,000, depending upon which state she teaches in. It tells me that we don’t really care very much about either our nation’s future or our children’s well-being. Okay, end of rant.]
A high school english teacher gets thrown to a magical world where she has to overcome evil forces, become a leader, and all the while falling for a gorgeous centaur who also happens to be her new husband.
I'm a fan of P.C. Cast's style of writing, but this particular book is an extreme form of it. The books by P.C. Cast that i've read have a modern style to the writing. But, when the need calls, they do occasionally attempt to give the reader the "archaic" feel by using a timeless form of modern language, avoiding slang and colloquialisms. This particular book on the other hand is too modern. It has so many pop culture references. Too many in fact that it took me out of the book. Not to mention question how come an english teacher, like the main character is supposed to be, couldn't fix her way of talking to match those around her.
Those around her, of course being magical creatures from an "old world" setting, who use the usual P.C. Cast "archaic" form. Because the use of "modern" language became an issue for the main character however, one begins to question the entomology of the "old world" language the magical character's use. Why do they have certain expressions, but not others that should have evolved parallel to them? Why is "okay", a supposedly 1838 Boston/New York expression, accepted and understood by centaurs who have no concept of either place? I realize this is a nit picky example but it is only one of many specific ones that when put together create a strange "feel" for the book. So even if I disregard the specifics, which you have to in any book that deals with "old world" places, it still feels a bit off. P.C. Cast is usually better than this when she writes similar themes. I've found, in fact, that she's one of the best.
There are even the occasional self aware moments. The main character breaks the forth wall and references herself as a character in a romance novel. This is fine but it runs the risk of taking the readers out of the story as well. Considering that the book had trouble keeping me in it to begin with, this thing just added to that.
I can't say I didn't like the concept of the book. It's what made me buy it in the first place. I love P.C. Cast's imagination and stories. It's the execution of this particular book that I had a problem with.
Would I say this is a good book for people who want to read this particular type of story and want to get into this author. Yes, as long as you havent read any P.C. Cast books before this one. You can still see all the hard work she put in it. You can tell she is a talented author. And if you find you like this one, you'll love her other books so much more. It's a good place to start.
3 stars. It's a good outing but P.C. Cast has better ones.

I really enjoyed the story, the characters for the most part, and the world building.
What I really didn't like, was the slut shaming. It seemed the MC Shannon took an immediate dislike to Rhiannon because she had had sex with a lot of her guards. This theme of hatred towards her because she was a slut stayed and it seemed very pre-teen and childish.

the actual story became lost in the boring info, unfortunately for me i purchased all these books together otherwise i wouldnt bother buying te rest of them

I love the world that pc cast has surrounded us in on this journey with Shannon parker the main character Shannon is good hearted and very witty .
I found my self laughing out loud a lot as being a horse rider my self I can relate to some parts of the book .
Clanfintanis is a warrior high shaman and headmaster of his people, but the down fall was for me he lacks lustre for a male character
his character was always referred to as my husband not by Clanfinton though out most the book so its like he's not really part of the book to me. ( yes we get it I just kept wanting to say ).
I am glad the story is not based on the romance aspect as there is no how can I put it ??? no feelings or chase its just is I was born to love you and you me done we are one ?? ,and more on the world that Shannon has been thrust in to :-)
