This is a great story. I bought it to give as a gift but I did not realize it would be a very worn old library book.

as a former teacher always liked this story ...when I taught 3rd grade this was a mandatory story to read for literature. It was a cute. Bought for my granddaughter because she will be losing teeth now that she is 6 years old. The basic story is about deception , sly fox BUT the mouse dentist and his wife are full of compassion and will not be outsmarted by the fox. Very cute story to read to your child or student.

I loved reading this to my daughter regularly in the mid eighties. She loved it as well. The lesson is compassion and kindness combined with developing a plan to protect yourself - not being foolhardy considering circumstances - without sounding preachy. I gave it to my dentist years ago when he had young daughters. I have to say I preferred the original illustration on the cover, although this is adorable too.

I've loved this book for well over 25 years... one of my all-time favorites!! Our children grew up loving it, too! It's so well written... the characters are all so charming, and the vocabulary used is just delightful. I was so glad to find that Amazon is carrying it so that my grandchildren and lots of other families can have this book in their homes, too... thank you, thank you, and thank you!!!

My grand daughters enjoy reading this book. The storyline is cute - a small mouse as a dentist who outsmarts his patient, the fox, who plans to eat the dentist when his tooth has been pulled.

Dr. DeSoto was a book I remember from my own childhood. Got this for my daughter for Christmas, paired with a toy dentist set.
The story is very creative and focuses on a pair of mice dealing with a dangerous customer. It is also great for preventing little ones from being scared of a visit to the dentist. I'd highly recommend.

Such a fun story, but so many lessons to be learned along the way, too. Dr. De Soto, a mouse, takes his job as a dentist quite seriously, trying to alleviate pain in the mouths of a large variety of animals. Taking pity on a crying fox with a terrible tooth, he knows that he's risking death for himself and his wife by helping the poor creature, but his better nature rules the day. When clever Dr. DeSoto figures out a way around his dilemma, children applaud the very satisfying result.

Teaches kids to have wit, as well as dealing with size and going to the dentist.

I loved reading this book to my kids (all now grown) back in the day. When my dentist let me know she was expecting I bought this for her so she could read it to her child.
Great book, nice story, very good art -- as expected from a Caldecott Award winner.

William Steig is a fantastic author. He has a real way with words and spinning a yarn. His stories appeal to the reader (adult) as well as the child. My daughter loves this story and has for several years now. We return to this title and others by Steig on a regular basis. I believe I read one complaint about the blood on the tooth. You know your kids best. If they're put off by such a thing avoid it, but I can't imagine more than one out of fifty or even a one of a hundred being bothered. I'm much more likely to be offended by trite, poorly written stories and you sure won't find that here.

Such a great story with very cute illustrations. Despite being for kids older than 2 my 2 year old daughter loves this book and manages to follow the story.
