I have mixed feelings about this volume. On one hand it's not a very good Doctor Strange story. The Doctor Strange here is arrogant, selfish, jealous, and completely out of character. He feels as if he's regressed to where he was before he gained his mystical might. It's not even in line with what Jason Aaron, the series' previous writer, had been doing with the character. On the other hand this is a great Loki story, which is kind off the reason I bought the book. Loki has stolen the title of Sorcerer Supreme from Stephen Strange, but for what purpose? This really is all about Loki, and it perfectly encapulates everything that's happened to his character over the last few years. A villain trying to atone for his sins and be a hero, but still as mischievous as ever. This is about Loki right down to a surprise cameo that didn't disapoint. I expected a lot more from this volume's writer Donny Cates. His work on Thanos Wins was excellent but this is just okay. The art isn't great either. Gabriel Hernandez Walta's work looks incomplete. As much as I wanted to score this higher as a fan of Loki, this is a Doctor Strange title and should have been better with his character.

Evil is everywhere, and the world needs the Sorcerer Supreme more than ever. But the Sorcerer Supreme is now…Loki?! Say hello to the Master of the Mischief Arts! The Norse lord of lies has the cloak, the spells — he's even got Zelma Stanton as his assistant. (And possibly more?) Is this the chance Loki needed to become a hero at last, or is the trickster god dangerously close to unlimited power? And what happened to Stephen Strange, the former Sorcerer Supreme? Down but not out, Stephen may just have one last play left in him — one that could shake the Marvel Universe to its core! But will it be enough to take back his title, with the life of someone he loves hanging in the balance?

I ordered this because Loki is my favorite Marvel villain, and I have been enjoying his new "antihero/not quite a villain" status in the last few years (since being reborn after Siege). I had every intention of reading this later, but when I opened the first couple of pages I was immediately hooked and read straight through. It was fantastic!
The Vishanti have taken the mantle of Sorcerer Supreme from Strange and given it to Loki - how, why?! The story is told from Strange's POV as he initially accepts his ouster, but then realizes that could be disastrous. And, there's his new apprentice Zelma to consider. She's working for Loki now, but is she in danger?
I loved the writing. Sadly, I cannot say the same for the art. As per usual, the cover art is done by a different artist than the interior. And the interior art is ugly (imho). It looks like bad cartoon art, with characters disproportionate at times and muddy backgrounds. I much prefer "clean" lines. Still, the story is absolutely worth the purchase.

This volume focuses on Doctor Strange and his struggle with the new Sorcerer Supreme, Loki. Doctor Strange returns to his Sanctum Sanctorum to find it that after his struggle with the Empirikul, Baron Mordo and Mr. Misery he has been replaced by non other than the god of Mischief. Now, Doctor Strange has to find a way to reclaim his title with almost no magic at all.
This is a bit wacky but genius story that plays through Doctor Strange's new attitude created in the recent run while giving us a very charismatic Loki. You will find himself not knowing who to cheer for as Doctor Strange tries to find a way to cheat his way through the master cheater.

Fast-paced, with cosmic stakes and shattering, unexpected betrayal. Just, wow. Clever writing for the God of Mischief, and clearly influenced the current MCU in terms of bringing humanity to the Sorcerer Supreme, and giving us a glimpse of the wider world of magic and the supernatural. Id it hacks to say this title puts the "super" back in supernatural? Art highly reminiscent of the Kuberts. Brava!

Cool Concept, Great Writing, Brilliant Art

I was super excited when I found out about this book. Loki taking on the mangle of Sorcerer Supreme? Sounded like a super interesting concept. I'm happy to say it did not disappoint.
The story and writing are awesome, Donny Cates does a great job raising the stakes with each issue leading to an incredible climax. Seeing Sentry as a main part of the story was enjoyable too. Also how can you not love Dr. Strange's dog Bats?
We were also treated to some fantastic art by Gabriel Hernandez Walta, who illustrated Tom King's award winning Vision story. His style is simple, but yet somehow very detailed. He captures facial expressions and the overall feel of the story so perfectly. There's a certain emotional aspect that his art ads the story that was very present in his work on Vision, and it's clearly seen here.
Overall I loved this book and I'm very much looking forward to volume 2.
