Honestly, when Capaldi first began as the Doctor, I wasn't sure I was going to like him. He seemed stern, like a school teacher that you never want to have. But even in his first episode, his bit of crazy, interesting humor, began to get to me. Now, I love Capaldi, and will defend him against any who say he doesn't fit the bill. After so long without new episodes, to come back to this one was amazing. He expresses so much without saying a word, even with his "attack eyebrows", that you can really feel what his character feels. He reminds me of the older Doctors, but still has a lot in common with the newer Doctors, and still manages to add his own dash of silly and whimsical to the mix. And Bill, she surprised me as well. From the trailers, I thought she'd be stupid and annoying, but her personality, honesty and bluntness is all so refreshing and vibrant. Nardole is also a great character, he brings the "alien" perspective in a very human manner, and provides a good laugh and astonishing insight and intelligence. I'm really happy with the first episode, and I can't wait to see more!

Doctor Who "The Complete Tenth Series" bluray review.
Verified purchase
Have been a fan of Doctor Who for a while, and this series is one of my favorites. Pearl Mackie as Bill is one of the best 'new" Doctor Who companions. I miss the fact that she seems to be a 'one season' companion and won't be a part of the show anymore. Bill & the 12th Doctor make such a good Tardis team! Nardole is also fun, and his actor manages to make the character funny without making him a simple comic relief character (c'mon, how can you not laugh at Nardole's "death by Scotland" line?)

Now, this box set includes all the episodes from Series 10, plus the "Return of Doctor Mysterio" Christmas special from 2016. This set does NOT include the 2017 Christmas special called "Twice Upon A Time". That will have a separate release sometime in February, and it's also a possibility that it will be included in the future complete eleventh series box set. Unlike some previous Doctor Who releases, this comes in a slim style blu ray box set. It's not as elaborate as the digibook editions of the past season releases, and takes up a little less space on your shelf. If you buy it early enough, you will get a slipcover with it (same artwork as on the set's cover, no alternate art).

My favorite extra on the whole set (other than the binaural audio for the 'haunted house' style episode "Knock Knock") has to be all the behind the scenes stuff relating to the final two episodes. It's a good two part story with a couple returning villains (the Cybermen have not been this creepy/scary for a long time), some surprises, and overall I think it's a good way to end the tenth series. The 12th Doctor's last series feels like a good jumping on point for new Doctor Who fans (the first episode is called "Pilot" and sets up everything pretty well), and I'd definitely recommend it. :)

Great show, best Doctor Who season in quite a while.

This is a great season so far. I like the addition of Nardole as a main character in the plot, though he doesn't do much besides nag the Doctor for the first few episodes. However, there's really no continuation from season 9, it just starts out in a whole new place with vey little background until you get later into the season. Most episodes in the beginning seem to be well thought-out and exciting, but the rare three-part episode midway seems to drag out conflicts longer than needed. Only one episode felt rather dull as it goes back to the traditional plot where the characters are dropped on a different planet with no background and need to resolve a conflict between invading humans and another species. Typical us! :)

Bill is a good choice for a companion as Pearl is a decent actor, and it's nice to see how they took on some contemporary issues while developing her character. There are many clever puns too. And Missy is back! I try not to spoil while still writing a decent review, but the writers had her and the Doctor take a different route than the classic 'He spoils her plans and she runs away' scenario, and to me this is where the season differentiates itself. You get to see a deeper connection between those two, and it's really cool! The season finale has not aired yet as of this writing, but from the trailers I've seen I think it is going to be one of the best episodes for a long time to come.

Reluctant, Then Enthusiastic, Convert!

I am one of those that generally refuses to watch a particular season or Doctor until the former one has passed, most likely out of spite... I refused to watch the Matt Smith season until well after Capaldi was into his 2nd, due to my upset at Tennant's death (lol).... That said, once I began watching this season, I was yet again surprised to once again fall in love with the character of The Doctor...

Capaldi brings something to the role that I had not seen in the modern iteration yet: Sincerity.... And, more than that, humanity.

While Smith evoked well the childish, whimsical adventurer that we all long to be in our secret hearts, and nobody did cold, Time-Lord rage like Tennant... Capaldi shines in moments of breathtaking humanity... The Doctor in this season is one that wears his many scars quite openly, never shying away from the pain he's experienced or attempting to ignore the lessons they bring... Capaldi shows us The Doctor's pain, and his struggle... In a way that the other's simply did not.. And it is amazing in it's own right. <3

Started streaming - finished on Blu-ray = MUCH better experience.

We got tired of waiting on the Blu-ray to drop in the vicinity of a reasonable price. I'm mean, seriously, how does the BBC think their stuff will sell at double the price of Game of Thrones even? We noticed it was free via prime, so figured what they hey... we haven't streamed in a while, maybe the HD quality is at least on par with dvd now and hopefully it won't pause on us periodically to catch up. Surprisingly, HD actually looked pretty decent, still over-compressed and a little flat, but at least on par with DirecTV HD broadcast. A few episodes did start out in low resolution for a brief minute, but they never stuttered or stopped. A little more than halfway through the season, we're surprised to see the Blu-ray had finally dropped into our blind-buy threshold (though, at the moment it's climbed up a little - still decent by GoT or Walking Dead standards, but the previous price was appealing even by lesser series standards).

So we finished the season on Blu-ray and backtracked for the Christmas special included with the complete BD set as well. The posterization that plagued every episode we watched of the prime video stream was gone, replaced with better depth and colors. It was a little like going from an older 1080p tv to a new 4K tv with HDR. The soundstage was also much fuller, no longer carrying a clear bias for dialogue.

We didn't discover DW until the shows US BD deput with the Matt Smith series. Smith was an instant hit in our house. I think I finally began to connect with Capaldi with this, his final season. Looking forward to the supposed first female DW to drop on Blu at a reasonable price too. Serious fans will want to invest in the better quality presentation of a real tangible product they can legally own, unless when you're reading this it's already gone back up to forty, if not sixty bucks, as was still the going rate when we started streaming it, not to mention the BD set has a nice collection of extras, as usual.

Good End To Peter Capaldi's Tenure As The Doctor.
Verified purchase
I really enjoyed Peter Capaldi's tenure as The Doctor, and the 10th series was good and fun to watch with excellent moments of plot twists which I will not spoil in here.
Peter Capaldi's Doctor is different then the new "modern" Doctors. He was the grumpy Doctor of William Hartnell's first Doctor with the mix of the all the modern Doctors.
I also really enjoyed Michelle Gomez as Missy, and as quote Christopher Eccleston's Doctor. "Michelle Gomez was fantastic!" This is one one the best parts of the 10th series is the interaction of Peter Capaldi's Doctor and Michelle Gomez's Missy. The acting was well done between the 2 of them.
Pearl Mackie as Bill Potts did very well as The Doctor's companion. I really like her interaction with Matt Lucas's Nardole. I am also glad they brought back Matt Lucas's Nardole in this series. I thought he was charming in the Christmas special The Husbands of River Song.
In general Doctor Who 10th series was well acted and well written and a good end for Peter Capaldi's Doctor.
One thing I wished this set also had was the the other Christmas special "Twice Upon A Time" which would complete this set instead of buying it on a separate Blu Ray.

I was also glad to get this 10th series on sale at a great price. Other retailers had this series at around $60 - $80 price range and when I saw it on sale on Amazon I could not pass the chance on missing a great sale.
I also got it shipped intact and with out any damage. (Pictures provided.)

Wonderful, as always

I love all the Doctor Who seasons, but Bill was such an upgrade from Clara (being sadly my least favorite companion, though she grew on me once Capaldi came along), that it made me enjoy the season even more. #12 was spectacular of course. He was (and forever shall be) The Doctor, and he will be missed. I can't wait for the Christmas Special! I reserve judgement for the new Doctor until I see her in action, but I haven't been disappointed with a regeneration yet, so I'm tentatively hopeful!

A great season! This is a must for Whovians and other scifi lovers as well

I am loving this season! The Doctor is, well, The Doctor ... fun, quirky, exciting, and wonderful. The plots have been good too... classic doctor who, with some of The Doctor's arch enemies popping up unexpectedly. And Bill is a great companion. She's smart and independent, with a good sense of humor and a lot of moxy. Although it looks as if we lost her in the last episode, I'm hoping she'll show up again.

I understand that Peter Capaldi's doctor is going to be replaced, which makes me sad. I'm really enjoying him since they quit writing for Clara.
